When I was a prep sportswriter, I covered his son's football/basketball career. Philip was an awesome kid who played QB, went to a tiny college, converted to tight end and ended up making it to the NFL for a few cups of coffee.

Red and Rio Grande is one of my favorite songs from 90s country. Really feels like home. I know Doug had some legal troubles and Phllip's HS coaches were incredible role models for him when his dad was unable to make the proper commitments. I hope he found peace with his kids later in life.

I feel like there is a story buried in Old Rivalries somewhere about him that was sad funny. Hate to hear of his passing.

This song always hits me. This guy's music was a big part of my early 20s.

***** He was a family friend. Unfortunately our family connection with him died a few years ago and we lost touch. I'm really sorry to hear about this. Doug was a good time!

Dang. Sorry to hear this. He lived down the street for a while when we were kids and he was on my baseball team when we were 9. They moved but he would pop up in the news on stuff like making a hole in one or his music career. I was not into his music but thought it great when he was featured in a long story in USA today, recording a song with herschel Walker for a cowboys charity album, or his son playing in the nfl. His picture hung on the wall at carl`s bbq on 290 and I would always tell my kids that I played baseball with him. Too young.

His daughter was at A&M the same time as me. Feel bad for her and and her brothers.

He used to live in Bellville. For a while, it was a fairly common site to see him riding on a lawnmower on Highway 36 just north of town. And he filmed one of his videos at our high school football stadium.

Sad news.

I was once selected to be a juror on one of his trials. A few minutes later the judge came out and said dude was acting too crazy to be tried, so he dismissed us. His defense was something like NASA was paying him to follow around a minor league baseball team and smoke weed.

Got a chance to see him at the Washington County Fair in 1995. He played Pearl Jam's Better Man and dedicated it to his son who looked to be about Jr High or early high school age. Red and Rio Grande and You Still Got Me got a lot of playing time in my pickup back in the 90s. RIP.
