TL ; DR - 6 regions, 16 movies per region. First rounds of Drama, Family, Comic Book Adaptation today; First rounds of Comedy, Action/Adventure, SciFi/Fantasy tomorrow.

VOTE HERE

Longer Explanation
96 entries
6 regions: comedy, drama, family, action/adventure, scifi/fantasy, comic book adaptation
When we get to the spot there are 3 left on each side of the bracket, each trio will do a single-day round robin.
A vs. B; A vs. C; B vs. C
  • If that comes out 2-0, 1-1, 0-2 - 2 with the victories advance to the final four.
  • If that comes out 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 2 with the most combined votes advance to the final four.
Then the final four will be seeded on those regional final results.

It's a lot harder to seed 16 over 32. I'm sure I missed a ton of stuff, a lot if independent dramas in large part. I used Box Office Mojo as a starting point for each year, then went through the Rotten Tomatoes Best 140 movies of the decade to make sure I hadn't missed anything that I felt was really egregious (and there were several), and then I used my own personal preferences on some seeding. If you think it sucks, don't vote!
Or just complain incessantly, that seems to be your best trait Not you, I'm not referring to you, you're great! But them, you know who they are.

Not a lot of depth in that comic book region.

#3 No Country For Old Men vs. #14 The Hurt Locker

Hurt Locker deserves a bolt gun to the head, so I approve of this matchup.

Man, Almost Famous has no chance.

I wish Slumdog could make it far, but I don't see it happening. Having been to India many times, I have a great appreciation for the movie. A lot of the heart-wrenching moments in the movie are real. Two young ladies (sisters) that my wife and I financially adopted back in 2011 were slave rescues. One of them, has a scar that runs down the left side of her face. This scar was given to her by her drunk father who was marking her for a certain type of slavery (I will let you figure it out). In the movie, the main female character, Latika, receives a scar from a knife cutting her face towards the end of the movie. Every time I see this scene it breaks my heart for I know that is not a "movie" scene, but something that is very real.

Anyhow, some other notes;

Cars brings back some wonderful, fond memories for my present 12-year old absolutely loved the movie. We tried to collect all of the little die-cast figures that were coming out until Disney, ridiculously over-flooded the market with too many.

I see that the Drama group will be a runaway, along with the Comic group. However, the runaways are two of the greatest movies ever, so it is worthy.

The Family category will be wide open. Many of the movies listed could be top 4. It depends on the person voting. For example, some believe that Up was an amazing movie, however, I remember the movie scaring the crap out of my daughter due to all of the scary fire scenes at the end. Therefore, I don't care for the movie after having to deal with a child who couldn't go to sleep for nearly a month!

I feel the same way about Up but for different reasons. My wife and I rented it on demand in 2011 and had to shut it off early on, we had been struggling with infertility and a miscarriage and that scene early on when they can't have kids is a big sucker punch when you're watching a kids movie. It took us years to rewatch it. It is probably a higher seed if those weren't the conditions I first saw it in.

On a happier note, if you like Cars and have never been on the Cars' ride at California Adventure in Anaheim, you need to spray yourself down with hand sanitizer, put your face shield on, and get there ASAP.

Cars Land is fantastic. Went there last year during Thanksgiving.

Up is one of them movies that is borderline kid-friendly. Several older-age discussions throughout the movie.

It's crazy to see how much the comic book movie industry exploded in the 10's when you compare it to the 00's. There's of course many great movies, but also a lot of clearance bin garbage in that top 16. (Daredevil, Incredible Hulk, Ghost Rider...)

Pretty sure the top 16 of the 10's would have good to great all the way through.

Clearly the next tournament should be nothing but Nic Cage movies.

I guess, but considering what's listed in drama already, it'd be an odd fit.

The dude has a great resume, just off the top of my head:

Con Air
Face/Off
Raising Arizona
The Rock
Leaving Las Vegas
Fire Birds
National Treasure
Snake Eyes

Just a Nic Cage gif-off would be 24-carat gold

Gladiator - Definitely #1
The Departed - Top 5 for sure
No Country for Old Men - Top 5 for sure
Catch Me If You Can - Only semi-questionable, but great movie
Gangs of New York - Top 5 for sure

Where should it be?

Of the movies in that bracket? 16... there are probably movies even in the category not in the bracket that should rate higher than Gangs. Garbage movie.

Easy to forget that the recent string of marvel movies are in the past decade and not the early 2000s. Some of those comic book movies...Superman Returns, Wolverine, Hulk...yikes

No WALL-E?

Your Family Movie bracket should only consist of Pixar movies, they had a fantastic decade.

I would call it a drama movie with action elements, like Gladiator.

There were 7 Pixar movies released between 2000-2009. I am not a smart man, but I know what math is.
