The final trailer just dropped, and this looks like it could be one of the year's best shows, in what has already been an incredible year for TV. Based, of course, on the novels/original series back in the day. Great cast, beautiful cinematography, and somewhat of a darker, grittier, L.A. Confidential vibe all around. Can't wait...

HBO has been putting out far too many stinkers. I'm looking forward to Perry Mason. They need it to be as good as it looks and it looks really good to me.

I don't know. Something about Matthew Rhys always falls short for me. He was the weak link in The Americans. A couple nights ago I finally watched "A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood" and liked it but again I just never connect with him. It's hard to explain. Everything about his acting is fine but something about his eyes always just seem emotionless and dead. He never fully comes across to me.

I'll definitely give it a shot though.

Really disappointed they didn't use the Ozzy Osborne song for the trailer. I'm out!

J/k. I'll likely give it a chance.

I've never heard anyone express that opinion, if anything he was the primary appeal to the show.

Also, wasn't Perry Mason an attorney?

Really glad they chose the Ozzy song for the theme.

I used to watch the original Perry Mason show. It made me want to be a lawyer when I was a kid. I hope this is good.

I watched Perry Mason with my dad all the time and would always be amazed Hamilton Burger never lost his job. The man got his butt kicked in court after prosecuting an innocent person every week for years.

I've watched every Perry Mason several times. This probably will be like the Fugitive. David Jansen is Richard Kimble. Raymond Burr is Perry Mason.

It looks like Perry Mason by way of Philip Marlowe or the Continental Op.

Eh. I've fallen out of step with Sepinwall on a few shows as of late . Namely Succession, which he hasn't been a fan of.

I agree. He was the gospel when it came to reviews for a long time, but I feel like my tastes are different than his fairly often these days. Who's your go to for tv reviews/recaps?

Yeah, I'm not sure I've read Sepinwall since Breaking Bad. He was must read for The Wire and a number of other shows back then.

Yep... The Wire, Friday Night Lights, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc... I read and listened to him him religiously for all of those. But then I kind of stopped paying attention to him in recent years, for whatever reasons - just a general out-of-sync-ness - and then his Succession take was the last straw for me.

That said, I haven't really found a replacement, at least when it comes to to written reviews/recaps. My main go-to now for TV is The Watch podcast with Chris Ryan and Andy Greenwald. Andy can be kind of annoying at times, but he's super knowledgeable, and Chris is awesome. In fact, Chris is probably my favorite entertainment podcaster/reviewer/whatever, as he's always such a joy to listen to, and I find myself agreeing with him 95% of the time...

On the movie side, the same goes for Sean Fennessey, also at The Ringer...

Basically, Chris and Sean are my two go-to guys, and The Ringer is my one-stop-shop for everything now-a-days, at least when it comes to podcasts. Admittedly, I don't read as many reviews/recaps as I once did, as I've found I would much rather hear guys like Chris and Sean's reactions instead.

I saw a show about his brother Taddy, it was pretty good.

I definitely listen to The Watch when there's a big tv episode I want to follow up on, like their BCS coverage this spring. Probably more of an Andy guy than Chris, but I like both of them. I miss Andy's old Grantland columns. The Ringer has solid writers, there's just not one that grabs my attention every time.

Matthew Rhys is outstanding.

He actually carried Kerri Russell in the first two seasons of The Americans.

Ooh, first review I guess.

Enjoyed it, really beautifully shot and the 1930s visuals are outstanding.

Performances were good, though something about the story itself isn't super compelling yet. I'm intrigued to see where they go with it though, as they showed at the end of the ep there's going to be way more to this case than there appears.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Interesting first episode. Not the "whodunnit" I was expecting. Lots of tough material and tough shots already. Definitely not your parents' Perry Mason, that's for sure.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Pretty good! Nothing amazing, but yeah, it's beautifully shot, and I'm certainly intrigued. Great cast, too. I'm a sucker for depictions of '30s/'40s/'50s LA, and this definitely delivered in that regard. Can't wait to see where it goes from here.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
One question, though... was there any meaning to Perry's final line about the turtle? Did I miss a brief set-up for that earlier? I was stupidly eating chips & queso while watching, and might have missed some dialogue here and there due to the all the crunching.
fig96
How long do you want to ignore this user?
When Perry was having a smoke with the wife while the cops were questioning the husband at their house, she mentioned that her son really liked turtles. Feels like that may tie back in but not quite sure how at this point.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ah, gotcha. I knew the picture was obviously from the house, I just missed the initial turtle mention itself. Thanks.

So what do we think we will see for the remainder of the season (7 more episodes) -
  • A moment when he looks at his burn scar and determines he wants to get his act together
  • How he switches from detective to lawyer
  • What the story is behind the dairy farm
  • Why his 'friend' calls him papi (daddy)

There's nothing stupid about eating chips and queso. Don't beat yourself up.
