Amazon Prime is streaming (until May 6th) some movies, documentaries, and shorts that were set to premiere at SXSW this year. My Darling Vivian, a documentary on Johnny Cash's first wife, was first up for me and I highly recommend it.
The story is told through Vivian's four daughters with Cash along with old photographs, letters, and videos that she has not shared before and refused to sell through various book deals. The director is married to one of Vivian and Cash's grandsons, explaining the access to the four daughters and the personal materials. The documentary offers a look into the often overlooked relationship with Cash's first wife and follows them from meeting in San Antonio, moving to Memphis, and then to California. By no means is it a hit piece on June Carter, but it does offer a very different picture than the one painted by the Walk the Line movie. I'd consider this a must see for any Johnny Cash fan, and any Texan for that matter. Some of the footage from early on in the relationship was a really cool step back into time.
