Not trying to take attention away from this, but just thought I'd mention:

Cinemark (at least the one in B/CS) is doing a Harry Potter marathon. All of the films shown on the XD screen all week.

Just started reading Return of the King. I totally forgot how much I love this story, and basically all things Tolkien. Wish I could go to this

Fellowship is so damn good. Sound in the theater was cranked to 11.

Finished the marathon this afternoon.

As a film trilogy, I think I'd take Star Wars over Lord of the Rings, but Return of the King was definitely better than Return of the Jedi.

My only real beef I have is the decision to just have the Army of the Dead basically win the last battle all over. From memory, they just helped Aragorn claim the beachhead.

Yeah, but honestly it worked for the movie. It was long enough as it is and they needed to resolve the battle.

Not to mention there was zero realistic ways for them to win that battle without Deus Ex Army.

But I do appreciate the fact that they laid the groundwork for it and it didn't come out of nowhere.

agreed. the only other way they could have made it work is if the Orc army was really organized and cohesive at first, and then once the Witch King was killed they became unorganized and ineffective.

And I find myself in the LOTR > OG SW these days . Most of my enthusiasm for SW has dissipated.

I can sit down and watch any of the extended editions of LOTR at any point.
OG SW, I could for ANH and ESB, but not RotJ.

And it is a very good thing they never got around to making a Hobbit movie or three..... Such a shame.

I was born in 1972 and I think the Ring trilogy is MUCH better than the original Star Wars. Just everything was better done and I still dearly love both trilogies but Jackson's series, and Harry Potter at the same time, finally broke fantasy from the awful rut it had been in since modern film was invented.

Of course my taste could be questioned as i grew up liking Conan the Barbarian, Krull, Beast Master, and Dark Crystal.

I could barely sit through the 20 minute hug fest at the end of Return of the King with the theatrical release, can't imagine doing it after the extended edition, much less after 11 hours of the whole extended edition trilogy. It made that film much, much worse. Worst part of all three films.

Star Wars is more enjoyable to me.
