At dinner tonight, I was with a father whose daughter is getting married soon. I guess it's on him to come up with, or at least suggest, the song they dance to at the reception.

I imagine that there might be some particular reason/story that would make some song a slam dunk, but I don't have a daughter...

After a lot of thought, the best I could think of is "You are so beautiful to me". I feel that's a pretty good choice, but

What was/will be your song with your daughter (if you have one) or what's the best one you can come up with, if you don't?

(for those that want to go absolutely nuts, he said he wants to come up with 4 songs and tell the DJ to mix them to a 3 minute dance, so have at it! 4 songs max!)

Gracie by Ben Folds is an absolute love letter to a daughter from her father.

Since you're thinking of a mix, I'm going to go in a different direction and say God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. Every father/daughter song is from the POV from the father, but this would be perfect from the POV of the daughter.

Best one I saw started off with some sappy song like the rest, but the song skipped to a upbeat song and a scripted dance they had practiced together. The daughter did the choreography and the dad said the daily practices were his favorite part.

My little girl by Tim McGraw. My dad and I started with that song and got through the first verse (it's an emotional song and it was an important moment but slow dancing with my dad for 3 minutes isn't either of our styles) and then we changed over to a pre mixed song our DJ customized for us that included snippets of the Twist, Apache, Thriller, Mr. Roboto, Cant Touch This, and Party Rock. It was a complete surprise that we were doing this to the point that literally only me, my dad and the DJ knew about it. My dad and I live in separate cities so I made some simple dance moves for each song snippet and emailed them to him. We had one evening the day before the wedding to hide and practice for 30 mins and did the dance for real at the wedding. It was a TON of fun and surprised the hell out of everyone. It's one of my favorite memories with my dad. We got our slow, sappy dance and a fun dance all in one.

My eldest is 16. I'm hoping to not need this for like 10 years. Bookmarking.

As a dad of two young daughters, I love this post.

My daughter and I danced to "I Loved Her First" at the wedding reception. There was lots of dust in the room and my alerhies were really acting up for some reason.

My dad and I are both terrible dancers and not Texan, so our obvious choice was, "Waltz Across Texas," and it was lovely and took place in an iconic Texas venue so it worked out. We went with the not-schmoopy angle.

We danced to Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful" because my dad has always loved that song.

My dad and I danced to God Only Knows. It's his fave BB song, and really sentimental.

I've always loved the song 18 Yellow Roses by Marty Robbins. Even before I had kids I came upon the idea of giving my daughter yellow roses on her birthday.

Last year on her first birthday I gave her a single yellow rose and we had a dance around the playroom to that song. This year she'll get two. I plan on continuing to buy her roses for her birthday for the rest of my life. I'll never mention to her that sometime in the 2040s when she gets married, I really hope she thinks of that song as our song, but I really hope that's the decision she makes.

I was going to derail the thread but everyone is taking it so seriously I cant.

My (12-year old) daughter has already claimed this for our Daddy/Daughter dance at her wedding...

This was also my daughter's and my /daughter dance song. She took waltz lessons just so we could do it right.

The first time I heard Cinderella by Steven Curtis-Chapman, I told my wife that's the song my daughter and I will dance to at her wedding. She's 13 now and I tear up just thinking about it.

The opening line is why I think it's perfect. What kid hasn't been so angry with their parent that they thought they didn't "love" them. No matter how mad I get, I don't know I'd function without you.

Is there a female version of Cat's in the Cradle?
