How long do you want to ignore this user?
Has not given a reason for it though, maybe health or family

he's a method guy...this just means his next role will be a film about an accomplished actor who, without warning, walks away from it all

and the 2019 oscar for best lead actor goes to...

I was really hoping to see him in the MCU.

Gwyneth Paltrow is also retiring... Has Gwyneth Paltrow just been a character DDL has been playing all these years?

Not a chance. Ddl has the ability to make all of his characters sympathetic.

What a terrible loss for the world.

Last of the Mohicans is one of my favorite movies. He was incredible in Gangs of New York.

Now all I can think about is how epic would it have been if he was Thanos

Does he have anything coming out soon? Maybe one last great performance before he hung it up?

I heard he's got one more about to come out, though I know nothing about it

I know he was tied to a PT Anderson movie about a fashion clothier in London in the 50s I think. But I have no idea if that ever got off the ground.

That was supposed to be his return to acting after his 5 year sabbatical to be a farmer with his family.

Best actor ive ever seen.

It's about 1950s high fashion in London. Yea.

It will be 3 hours and you will come away discussing only the best in tweed.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, one of the greatest directors alive, and the same guy who directed him in There Will Be Blood.

Oh so it did get made? In post production?

Yeah, it comes out at Christmas. Probably the Oscar front-runner at this point. DDL will do press for it and everything, and then (apparently) never be heard from again.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's so sad.

Ok good. So at least we get one more.

And not just a DDL thing, but I've been waiting to get the unfortunately bad taste of inherent vice out of my mouth from PTA.

It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good.

Looking at his filmography, There Will Be Blood is the only movie of his that I've seen that I didn't care for.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Agreed 100%. There Will Be Blood, IMO, is the best movie of the century so far. And I loved The Master more than most. But I just could not get into Inherent Vice.

And btw, Phantom Thread - the PTA movie - was either the worst experience of DDL's career, driving him to retire - or - he knows he's going out firmly on top. Will be interesting to see which (I kid, but you never know...)
Bunk Moreland

Yep. The Master was really good too. Agreed on TWBB.

It's the most perfect movie I've seen in what I would consider my adult lifetime. Still crazy to think that and NCFOM were the same year.

AND Zodiac. AND The Assassination of Jesse James. All four of those are all-timers, IMO, all in 2007.

These came out within two months of each other I think, they are my two favorite movie of at least the 2000's - favorites before that are heavy on nostalgia.

But based on your comment I suggest we be friends

This is more a NCFOM vibe, but since we're all just chatting about top movies of the century, I have both Sicario and Hell or High Water way up there too. Probably both in my top 10 since 2000.

Wind River is easily my most anticipated film of the year.

I really enjoyed sicario but blunt's ridiculously naive fbi agent irritated me.

There will be blood also robbed Roger Deakins from finally winning a best cinematographer Oscar. He photographed No Country for Old Men AND Assassination of Jesse James that year. (Also did Sicario, too).

Edit: don't mean TWBB shouldn't have won, it was just too bad for Deakins that it came out the same year as two of his best works

Blunt just didn't have the chops to stand opposite of Del Torro.

You don't think responding with disbelief and indignation that the cia operates south of the border was in the script?

Wasn't that the entire point? All FBI Agents aren't former special forces with 3 tours under their belt.

Literally the only reason she was on the detail was to circumvent federal law for the CIA to go in and do their thing. They chose her specifically because she was naive, weaker, and they knew they could scare her into shutting up. And specifically didn't choose her partner because they knew he'd be a major headache.

I'm not saying she deserved an Oscar, but I wasn't bothered by her performance at all.

you are right that was her job. but, i was bothered by her performance. it's the only major drawback of an otherwise phenomenal movie.

There has to be a reason for this retirement. Is he politically active? Will he move into that arena? He's not that old. What country/city does he live in currently?
