So as stand alones The GF and GF2 are at the top of my all-time list. Seen each literally 20+ times probably.

I had however never seen "The Complete Godfather Epic" before which I had heard plenty about. It's basically 1 and 2 re-edited to chronological time order (so the entire movie starts with young Vito and there are no flashbacks save for Michael's flashback to Vito's bday dinner at the very end). Plus there are some interesting deleted scenes.

My initial thoughts as I just wrapped it up after watching the 7+hrs in bits and pieces over the last week from my DVR are (some spoilers ahead as far as the deleted scenes and anyone who hasn't seen the entire movie obviously):

Best Deleted Scenes:

1: Easily number one is Genco on his death bed post wedding. FFC and Puzo do a masterful job showing the kind of power VIto has when Genco begs Vito to stay with him to scare away the angel of death. Powerful scene, and not sure why FFC left it out of the final cut because its so damn good.

2: Just prior to that, Vito tries to talk to Michael in the hall about his future and Michael just brushes him off.

3: Before Paulie is rubbed out, Clemenza goes into the alley saying he has to call Sonny. Instead, he sits down and scarfs down a big bowl of pasta secretly.

There's a few other deleted scenes that are more minor, but still cool to see like the intro to Hyman Roth and Michael's revenge on Fabrizio.

One thing I really came away with watching the epic and some of its deleted scenes was that FFC really at first wanted to put an emphasis on what a bad don Sonny woulda been. There are several instances within the final cut and the deleted stuff where its clear Sonny just isn't boss material.

Anyway, glad that after all these years I was finally able to get this on DVR and watch it. If you're a Godfather nut like myself, and haven't seen this version I highly recommend it.

I'm 5 hours into it and have the same positive reactions. Having seen the originals probably 20 times each this is amazing to see all the extended and deleted scenes.

****Spoilers****

Loved the scene with Vito and Michael after the wedding where he openly accuses Michael of being a disrespectful son and mocks him for his military service. That gives more context for the later scene when Sonny confides to Michael that Pop was very proud of him for being a war hero and of course the final dinner scene.

Also watching the Deniro scenes first allows me to appreciate and understand much more about his emotions and decisions in episode 1. Liked all the extra Genco stuff as well.

I've caught this recently as well.....its SOOOO good.

And I've seen GF I and II probably 70+ times each, maybe 100 and i'm not exaggerating.

Loved all the deleted scenes, I mean you can see why they were left out of a 3 hour movie so that it isn't even longer, but in context of the entire Epic they give a lot more explanation, context, depth, meaning, etc.

It's really for the true fan, nobody else would sit through that.

You've seen GF & GF II 100+ times, yet you took your username from a Jennifer Aniston movie??

Edit: In reference to the poster formerly known as "No Ragrets".

Cuz it's funny. Godfather not so funny. And I tend to pick something more current.

I change my username every year or so. About to change again. Probably GOT this time but lots of those exist already.

I started to Ragret the name - people have a certain expectation of that name. And it was just time to change...I change about every year or so.....decided NSD was a good time to start anew.

I can't imagine the young Vito storyline working as well as seeing it in parallel with Michael's story. Does it?

well....my answer is no....and yes.....

if you/anyone had never seen Godfather then no it doesn't work very well.....but for those who do know it and know it well (which i imagine is most of the people who would bother watching the chronological Epic version) then yes it works because of course you know the story and who he becomes.

If somehow Godfather initially were released chronologically as 2 movies then no it would not have worked at all.

I know "No Ragrets" as a tattoo that the moron biker kid has in the film "We're the Millers".

I assume this deleted scene is in there:

After Vito is shot, Sonny tells his mom who takes it all in stride and says she's going to the hospital. Sonny makes a sandwich and goes to his father's study to make some calls. He walks into the room and he sorta glances at his father's chair and quickly decides to sit in a different chair (IIRC at a table rather than at the desk).

I always loved this deleted scene. Sonny knew who he was and knew he wasn't up to running the family. He was so devoted to fighting because it was the only thing he knew how to do well. The book discusses the previous mob war and talks some about how Sonny was this unbelievable fighter and just had a knack for mob war.

If you love The Godfather you really need to read the book. Pretty much all of the deleted scenes I've seen are basically straight out of the novel. The Johnny Fontane and Lucy Mancini storylines are pretty useless in my opinion, but the additional detail you get about the Michael/Sonny/Vito stories are absolutely worth it.

In the book, the story is just like the movie up until Michael kills Solozzo, then after some sidetracking it tells Vito's story from the second movie, then it goes back to the mob war, then it tells Michael's Sicily story, then it lines back up with the movie again.

I was really hoping there'd be a 35 minute deleted scene devoted to Lucy's vagina.

They also insinuate that Woltz is a child rapist, which I was glad was originally dropped since you don't need any more reason to dislike him.
Maybe Woltz is based off Roman Polanski. Or any number of producers in Hollywood I guess.

One thing that has always puzzled me. Did the toll booth collector drop the coin on purpose so that he could hunker down? Also, you never see him get up, did he get killed?

Damn you all. I had it downloaded and cause of this thread decided to throw it on in the background while I did some other stuff...obviously this led to not going to bed until 3AM. One does not simply put The Godfather on in the background.

Pretty much same observations as everyone else. It's a neat edit, it loses some of the spirit when chronological, and deleted scenes are worth the watch for longtime fans.

I know its just a movie (an excellent one at that) but the amount of gunfire that came at Sonny in that direction in a real world would not have left that toll operator alive anyway. he was almost directly behind Sonny and pretty vulnerable.

as far as unexplained mysteries of "The Godfather" mine would be who really killed Michael's would be assassins in Tahoe? I mean they were killed behind the gates so obviously it was someone close. i think some people assume it was Fredo but Fredo's personality doesn't really mesh with the type that would take guys out like that. on top of that, I think there's a degree of doubt on whether Fredo knew there was going to be a hit. I don't know what he thought was going to happen but I don't think he believed a hit was happening on his brother.

you surely did not see this years ago, it was just released in January.

You are likely thinking of The Godfather Saga which combined GF I and II in chronological order - NBC did that in 1977 and it aired in many other cable stations over the years.

Or in 1992 The Godfather Trilogy which did the same including GF III.

This is The Godfather Epic which again combines GF I and II and includes deleted scenes that were not included in the GF Saga or GF Trilogy. It started airing on HBO in January. It has many of the same deleted scene, but some others as well.

so you're suggesting that there was no way he saw the clemenza deleted scene before HBO just started re-running this "new" cut?

no i'm simply suggesting there is no way he "saw this years ago"....this being THIS version...yes that scene was in previous versions. just clarifying this is a different version. he might think he has seen the version we are currently talking about. might be 98% overlap but there are differences.

The Clemenza scene doesn't stand out to me, but I think pretty much all of the deleted scenes were released with the special features when they released the trilogy on DVD. I haven't seen this cut or the old NBC one, but I specifically remember the one where Michael catches up to Fabrizo, the one with Sonny choosing not to sit in his father's chair, the one with Woltz and the little girl, and the one where they go visit Genco on his deathbed.

I did the same thing when I found it on HBO last night.

For people who don't want to watch the whole thing, most (if not all) of the deleted scenes can be found on YouTube.

Watched the Epic the past two days. I've seen 1 and 2 a bunch (not 100 times but still plenty) and this was an awesome way of showing it. I think it was closer to the book with all the deleted scenes added back in. Those really show the power Vito had and flesh out the movie more.

AWESOME(!!!!!!!!!) version. Renews my interest in these movies all over again!

If you like the movie...go read the book!

There is SO MUCH good stuff from the book that was left out of the movie.

For example, in the movie Luca Brassi is a sympathetic character almost comedic. In the book...holy cow he is a despicable bad ass.

Interesting, give us more thoughts here. Seriously.

Great "spree" to be on, my favorite genre! Can't wait to hear a newbies take on Goodfellas.

Great! I saw it about 2 weeks ago for what had to be the 20th time. Have fun, and make sure you have the uncut version (not "TV"). And pay attention to the music, especially in the last 1/4 of the movie.
