Why do all the disasters movies happen to California? Planet of the Apes, Godzilla, San Andreas (yes, I know the fault line) . . .

NY Times review

I didn't want to post the full quote because it has a spoiler, but this cracked me up given the source

Liberal Hollywood strikes again!

Seems like a movie to wait for Netflix to me. Nothing bad, nothing great.

I'll save my blockbuster movie money for Jurassic World. That one intrigues me.

We may see "Earthquake Irving Texas" pretty soon.

That was a sequel to the LA disaster film "Clippers - Rockets".

I'm usually pretty good about knowing ahead of time what movies are going to make it, which ones will blow up the box office, and which ones will go down hard.

It's not looking good for this one. I don't think many people out there give a crap about California or any other place getting destroyed via CG effects... regardless of whether it's earthquakes, meteors, aliens, etc.

I'll probably see it eventually and it will probably be a decently fun movie to watch. Just hope they didn't spend too much making it.

So you're going to see it despite figuring that it is bad? That's why they make ****ty movies.

Exactly. I love when people bemoan crappy movies while simultaneously forking over money to see them.

This movie will do well for one reason:

This movie isn't being marketed as "San Andreas." It's being marketed as "The Rock IN San Andreas!"

The Rock will guarantee that this movie will do well, both domestically and overseas. Furious 7 is still in the theaters and there isn't another big movie to compete with right now.

Notice I didn't say that this movie will be huge or a blockbuster. I said it will do well. The reviews I've been seeing all the say same basic thing: this isn't a "good" movie and it's not terrible. It's stupid and entertaining. That may be a good enough endorsement for many people (myself included).

You guys are selective readers. I said the movie wouldn't do well at the box office. I will probably see it at some point (like redbox), but it will probably be a big disappointment for the studio money wise.

There are plenty of movies that did poorly that I still enjoyed personally.

I saw it tonight. Ridiculous but gripping. Basically everyone in California dies except for the Rock and a few others, but they kind of gloss over that. I thought the special effects were great, the story required massive amounts of "um, sure, sounds good even though that's impossible" from the viewers, the Rock is a star for a reason, the very last scene of the movie was too cheesy, and while there were other issues, it's not like those things matter. You see this movie to see LA and San Fran get destroyed and to see the Rock do one ridiculous thing after another. And it delivers on those counts. So, thumbs up.

Haha I made a mockbuster for this movie at The Asylum. The blonde jail bait chick is Grace Van Dien. Casper Van Dien's daughter. She is 18 though so it is ok.

Glad I waited until it hit HBO. I must live in crazy town, because that was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. The opinions on here made me feel like it wouldn't be an entire waste - it was.

I watched it the other night finally.
I can't even begin to count the number of things scientificall/mechanically wrong with the movie, and some of the special effects were pulled straight from the 70's. Plus without throwing in spoilers, the rock basically ignoring his job with government equipment in tow the way he did made little sense.

But for what it was trying to be I think it did ok.

Saw it on HBO over the weekend.

Decent disaster flick. Daddario's breasts were the best "visual effect" in the movie.

What I couldn't shake during the entire film was that the Rock was Rescue pilot, and the only people he really ever attempted to save during this entire crises were his wife and daughter.

They're going around in a boat, looking for the daughter. Are you telling me that there was not a SINGLE person clutched to a lamp post or floating by that they could pull into their boat? Or did they just motor past them muttering "not our daughter....screw 'em."

Seriously, he told a group of people to go stand beside the walls of the baseball stadium...........and that was the extent of his contribution to the well being of the people of San Francisco and Los Angeles. He even commandeered emergency vehicles that could have been used to rescue countless people. Jerk.

pretty bad movie, but was a great "flipping through the channels and kill some time" movie to come across this weekend. i have no complaints for it on that level. that said, there is plenty to make fun of and pick apart if you want to.

bill's post above does a good job if it.
