I have to say, this is the first role in I don't know how long where I'm actually excited to see Depp. He's wearing blue contacts here (it of course wouldn't be Depp without some kind of extra make-up), and they no doubt look fake, but they also make him look scary as hell. Here's the rundown...

quote:
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.

Apparently Jack Nicholson's character from The Departed was partially inspired by this guy. Bulger's eventual arrest was profiled in a great 60 Minutes piece a couple years back, where he was actually caught living under a new identity in Santa Monica (just a few blocks from me), and how they finally caught him is a pretty crazy story chronicled in the movie as well.

Definitely has the potential to be something great - almost Goodfellas-esque - and the trailer at least hints that it's well on its way...

I have been excited about this movie since the first time my uncle who was the station chief for this case told me about it and I said "man that would make a great movie with that kid from 21 jump street"

Surprised I don't see Adam Scott's name on that list, as I saw him in numerous scenes in that trailer.

Looks good.

Nicely done.

I'm likely to boycott Black Mass, unless there are indications the filmmakers decided to stay true to the reality of Mr. Bulger:

- his politically prominent brother was of major assistance
- the U.S. attorney's office, and not only the FBI, protected him from the Boston police
- at least 2 U.S. attorney's used Bulger's organization to whack blackmailers
- Bulger was not only a coward and a rat, he wasn't a particularly effective gangster. He received zero respect from the U.S. gold standard of organized crime, the Italian-dominated New England-Chicago syndicates associated with the Five Families. The Irish were small time, and he was a small timer within them. Only "Southie" storytelling has built him up, and a solid number of them are meth and crack heads.

Unless these facts are respected, I cannot partake.

Definitely looking forward to this movie. Depp always does a great job in these darker type roles, think Donnie Brasco or George Jung in Blow. Come to think of it, it's interesting that he takes on more based on true story characters than many other actors.

Hopefully this will be better than the last gangster movie Depp did about 5 years ago.

Really looking forward to this. If this trailer gets you interested, go watch the documentary Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger. It's available on netflix, and it's insanely interesting and pretty scary too.

Just got out of this and I really enjoyed it. The cast is amazing and all the actors are good but Depp as Bulger was the best. As your watching the movie you really believe that he is a crazy mobster. He really looked the part of Bulger. I've been looking forward to this movie for sometime and it did not disappoint for me.

This makes me want to watch The Departed now that I know more about Whitey Bulger.

I like The Departed (yes I realize lots of people didn't like it). But I wouldn't go watch it because you want to learn/know more about Bulger. Based on everything I've heard/read, while Nicholson's characters as loosely based on the man, Nicholson was a characature of Bulger....not an accurate portrayal.

Yeah I know its loosely based on Bulger. I've seen The Departed many times and I love it. I just want to watch it because of mobsters and Boston and what not. After watching Black Mass I now understand Matt Damon's character in Departed more and know that he kind of plays the role of John Connolly.

Gotcha. I thought you were implying you'd never seen it and wanted to watch it to "learn" more about Bulger.

I want to see this because of Depp, but the facial prosthetics in the trailer are painfully bad

I saw Black Mass tonight and loved it. Depp was pretty good but I thought all the other acting was terrific. One of my favorite movies I've seen in a while, but I'm a huge sucker for mafia movies.

Was looking forward to this for a long time, finally rented it.

What a letdown. An ensemble cast did not cover up a choppy storyline.
