How long do you want to ignore this user?
One of the most original, inventive movies I've seen in years. So clever and so incredibly well-done.

I never thought I'd be saying this, but the relationship between Phoenix's character and Samantha, his OS, is phenomenally realized and ultimately more captivating than most on-screen person-to-person relationships. It probably doesn't hurt that Scarlett Johansen is the sexiest, funniest, cutest-sounding OS imaginable, but she sells the role in ways I wasn't anticipating, to the point where you really do believe in her as a character just like any other flesh-and-blood person.

This may be a ridiculously obscure comparison, but for whatever reason, I vividly remember watching Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street as a kid. And there were times when he'd duck down in his trash can, disappearing to go retrieve something, and when he did, the sound effects always made it sound like this deep, cavernous, cluttered cave of a trash can and I just remember being so insanely curious about what it looked like down there. Just that sense of wonder as a kid.

Well, I had that same feeling here with Samantha. I was just as curious about her world as she is ours. She'll disappear for a while, or Phoenix will get off work and ask her how her day's been, and an amazing job is done of painting a picture of where she was, how she spent her day, etc. And that idea of her "consciousness" just surfing the web all day and having opinions and feelings about her experiences was so fascinating to me. And incredibly realized.

I will say that the whole conceit takes a while to get used to. It's really weird at first and the audience definitely snickered during the beginnings of the "relationship" in much the same way a jr. higher might snicker at a gay couple on screen. But as the story progresses, you really, truly do start to care, and it goes places you don't quite expect.

It's such a fun, unique vision of the future too. Not only in terms of fashion and tech, but how we relate to and interact with that tech. If anything, it was just refreshing to watch a movie in which A.I. isn't some malevolent entity bent on human destruction. Instead, it's ultimately a positive, even somewhat optimistic vision of our marriage with technology. As showcased in a few instances, sure, it can make for a potentially sad and lonely existence too, but it all depends on how well you know yourself first and foremost. And that's basically the point of the movie.

Ultimately, Her may be too out-there for some. It's different. But I really do think a good number of you will enjoy it. With 53 reviews, it's currently sitting at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and I'd say it's easily in my top ten of the year, maybe even my top five. Either way, really looking forward to discussing this one...

Her hit theaters in limit release today and goes wide on January 10...

Per your recommendation TCTTS, I will now plan on seeing this in theaters. Which by the way, I have a lot of stuff to catch up on. Luckily I have a cool job that's giving me 2 and a half weeks off for Christmas. Looking forward to seeing them at matinee prices as well.

Nice. And yeah, so many great movies here at the end of the year. It's kind of crazy.

That's the actress from Arrested Development who plays Ann, aka "Her?"

Just checked and it appears as if it's playing only in NY, LA, Toronto, Boston, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle for now. Like I said, it goes wide on January 10, but I can't find evidence that it'll be rolling out to any other cities before then. Hopefully it will, though..

This flick does look to be very interesting and it is not far fetched to think humans will find comfort in AI in the next 10 years or so rather than taking a gamble on human interaction.

I saw the preview this weekend. It looks like a wonderfully made movie, but I have zero desire to see it. It's creepy and a bit twisted. It's like Lars and the Real Girl...I just couldn't watch it.

S1m0ne!!! I think that movie was the cliff that Al Pacino's career fell off of.

Forgot the face.

A better comparison would've been Armageddon and Deep Impact. Dante's Peak and Volcano.

Which movies are TDK and which ones are B&R in this analogy?
Brian Earl Spilner
How long do you want to ignore this user?
They're not?

If you're asking which ones are better --

Dante's Peak over Volcano

Armageddon and Deep Impact are tougher. One is more realistic and another is decidedly cheesy and over the top, but I like them both. I actually really like Armageddon. I mean how can you not love that movie?

This sounds like a repackaging of Lars and the Real Girl am I off base there?
El Mero Guero
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I am sure there may be similarities, but having the love interest be an OS, rather than a sex doll, opens the possibilities up significantly imo. This one can go a lot of places that movie couldn't and there is opportunity to get much more creative. Unfortunately for us though, it rules out the possibility of artificial tiddies.

This definitely isn't Lars and the Real Girl. Phoenix's character isn't some introverted weirdo or anything like that. In this future world, once the A.I. operating systems are released to the public, a good chunk of the population really starts to connect with them. Some people simply use them as advanced Siris, some have them as "friends," while others - not just Phoenix - actually "date" them. There's even a line about how one person is cheating on her OS with someone else's OS. In other words, dating your OS kind of becomes a "thing." It's still kind of looked at as strange by some people, but Phoenix definitely isn't the only one who's doing it.

Exactly, El Mero Guero. And it's really clever how a lot of those possibilities are showcased.

As for the artificial tiddies thing... they kind of find a way around that. A "fix" that does or doesn't work out well.

Even though I have yet to see any of the frontrunners (DBC, 12 years) it sounds like this may be one of the most competitive Best Actor races ever. Sorry Leo... again.

Dammit, I hope that wasn't a spoiler.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
^ It's not. Don't quite know what he meant by that. Doesn't even feel like he's acting, maybe?

And yeah, I think it's Chiwetel Ejiofor's (12 Years) or McConaughey's to lose. Phoenix is amazing, and he's definitely got a shot, but he's probably third or fourth in line. We'll find out more on Thursday when nominations are announced...

Yeah sorry not a spoiler. I meant he did not feel like he was acting. He felt like a real actual person in real life. Everything he did in the movie was extremely well written, and his character made a ton of sense. And it was acted flawlessly. Sorry for the confusion.

Also somehow I missed Amy Adams was in this movie. Completely understated and extremely critical performance.

While Phoenix may have carried the movie and did the heavy lifting, u take Amy Adam's performance out of that and the movie is not as good.

Agreed. Such a "normal" performance, but also somehow vital.

MVP of Oscar season.
