Very sad these guys changed the way I listen to music.

Noel Redding, 57, Hendrix bassist

DUBLIN, Ireland -- Noel Redding, bass player for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience from its formation in 1966 through its dissolution three years later, has died. He was 57.

Redding was found dead Monday at his home in the town of Clonakilty in southern Ireland, his manager, Ian Grant, said Tuesday. An autopsy was planned to determine the cause.

"Noel was an extremely gentle and gracious soul. He had a kind of chivalry and nobility about him, and he was kind to everyone bar none, people and animals alike," said Deborah McNaughton, his longtime partner.

Chas Chandler, a former bassist for The Animals who became a rock manager, recruited Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell to form the Experience with Hendrix in England.

The band produced three groundbreaking albums of psychedelic rock -- "Are You Experienced?," "Axis: Bold as Love" and "Electric Ladyland." Its hits included "Purple Haze."

The group broke up in 1969 before the famed Woodstock appearance by Hendrix.

tis a shame. For all the acolades that they receive, I still think the Experience are truly underappreciated artists.

Bassists Benjamin Orr of The Cars, Rick Danko of The Band, John Entwhistle of The Who, Leon Wilkeson of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Noel Redding of The Experience, all recently gone.

Man, that is a real downer. First Wilkeson, then Entwistle, now Redding. All of these 3 were absolute *players*. Wilkeson doesn't get the love he deserves, that guy could lay down a groove. Entwistle and Redding were absolute masters, and will be sorely missed. Specifically Entwistle and Redding were simply pioneers in their playing styles. Time is a real *****.

...one day closer to death...

A follow-up...

The death of Jimi Hendrix's bass player Noel Redding is not being treated as suspicious, police have said.

Redding, who was 57, was found dead on Sunday at his home in Clonakilty in County Cork, Ireland.

The following is truly a shame....I think when Hendrix died he had $74 in his bank account. Redding thought Hendrix was taking all the money when in fact it was their attorney or tour manager (I forget) that was putting the $$$ in banks in the Bahamas.

Lost earnings

Mr Grant said he had never received his due share of the success he enjoyed in one of the world's biggest rock bands.

Earlier this year it was revealed he was suing the company handling Hendrix's back catalogue for up to $5m (£3.26m) in what he said were lost earnings.

Redding had accepted a $100,000 (£62,000) royalty payment in the 1970s after being told there would be no more releases of the group's material.

This was before their albums and live concerts were repackaged and reissued on formats such as CD and DVD.

Everybody got screwed in this deal and it probalbly weighed very much on why we lost Hendrix so young.

Oh well we may never know...

Too bad, he always seemed a little bitter about the Experience experience.

He actually was a guitar palyer himself who converted to the bass when Chandler recruited him for the Experience. He made one hell of a conversion.

Natural Causes at age 57, major bummer...

quote:
(5/15/03, 12 p.m. ET) -- The late Jimi Hendrix Experience bassist Noel Redding died of "natural" causes, according to authorities in Ireland. Redding, who was 57, was found dead in his home on Sunday (May 11) in County Cork, where he'd resided for more than two decades. His body was found in the bathroom by friends.

Clonakilty Sergeant Aidan Moynihan told Rolling Stone magazine that the local police have ruled out murder and suicide. "We're not investigating anything," Moynihan said. "The house was secure."

A public viewing for Redding takes place on Friday (May 16) at 7:30 p.m. at O'Sullivan's Funeral Home in the town of Clonakilty in West Cork. Redding's funeral procession leaves O'Sullivan's at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, with a service set for 3 p.m. at St. James Church in the town of Ardfield.

Flowers can be sent to the funeral home, or donations in Redding's name can be made to Mount Carmel Hospital in Clonakilty, West Cork, Ireland.

Some local Cork County musicians plan to honor Redding with a tribute show on Friday at the Clonakilty club, De Barra's. Redding's latest group, Noel Redding & Friends, played at the bar every Friday and had done a gig there on the Friday before his death (May 9).
