In their willingness to waste their considerable talent on unworthy material the Zeppelin has produced an album which is sadly reminiscent of Truth. Like the Beck group they are also perfectly willing to make themselves a two- (or, more accurately, one-a-half) man show. It would seem that, if they're to help fill the void created by the demise of Cream, they will have to find a producer (and editor) and some material worthy of their collective attention.

Jimmy Page...is also a very limited producer and a writer of weak, unimaginative songs, and the Zeppelin album suffers from his having both produced it and written most of it

That is great. Tough job but great evidence why to take all reviews with a grain of salt and listen for yourself.

And yet they name most, if not all of their albums in the top 500 albums of all time, and name them in the top 100 artists of all time.

Rolling Stone is utter ****.

Has anyone else gotten a free unsolicited Rolling Stone subscription lately? Seems the print industry is pretty desperate to keep circulation numbers from disappearing entirely.

Holy ****, is this reviewer using the word "spade" how I think he is?

this is how he opens up his review of Led Zeppelin II.

At least he owned up.

funny excerpt:

quote:
"Whole Lotta Love," which opens the album, has to be the heaviest thing I've run across (or, more accurately, that's run across me) since "Parchmant Farm" on Vincebus Eruptum. Like I listened to the break (Jimmy wrenching some simply indescribable sounds out of his axe while your stereo goes ape-****) on some heavy Vietnamese weed and very nearly had my mind blown.

Hey, I know what you're thinking. "That's not very objective." But dig: I also listened to it on mescaline, some old Romilar, novocain, and ground up Fusion, and it was just as mind-boggling as before. I must admit I haven't listened to it straight yet — I don't think a group this heavy is best enjoyed that way.

I work in the print industry and this is absolutely true. It's not a career I'd recommend anyone to start in now. Massive layoffs, downsizing, and consolidation going on all over the industry. I don't see myself being in it 3 years from now. It's too bad, because it used to be a pretty good paying job depending on what company you were with.

To me it shows that the whole idea of reviewing something that is 100% opinion is a joke.

I remember clearly when both Madonna and Cindy Lauper had their first albums released. The reviewer in the Houston Chronicle rated both in the same edition of the Sunday "Zest" section. He prased Lauper as a great new act who would be around for years to come and rated Madonna as a one hit wonder who would be a footnote in history...:-)

I've been getting free print Rolling Stone. No idea why. It really, really sucks.

That's because the pop industry has little to do with music ability and more to do with image. Madonna pushed the sl*t boundary and so she sold more.

I've gotten a free subscription lately as well. The album reviews are a joke, almost everything now rates above average.
