Ok...call me stupid. Is Les Paul a style or someone who makes guitars?

Les Paul basically invented the electric guitar many decades ago. He helped design the body style that was named after him.

So Les Paul is the style?

"Les Paul" is the general style but their are sub-styles within that (e.g. Les Paul Jr., Les Paul Custom, Les Paul Double Cutaway, etc.). Generally speaking however, when someone says "Les Paul" this is exactly the style they're talking about.

Yes, Les Paul is a style...but it's named after a person.

I thought Les Paul was a "brand" of guitar, or a guitar built by Les Paul.

I didn't know you could make a Les Paul out in your garage.

Rudy, today "Les Paul" is a style of guitar made by Gibson. Kind of like say a car, where say Gibson = Ford and "Les Paul" = Mustang. You can get a Mustang GT, Mustang LS, whatever they are. Originally the guitar that bears the name "Les Paul" was made by the man Les Paul, in collaboration with the Gibson company.

Also, with regard to making a "Les Paul" in your garage, since the guitar is such a famous design, even other guitars that look similar are said to be a "Les Paul" style. So you can make a "Les Paul" style guitar in your garage, it's just not a true Les Paul guitar from Gibson (however it might be even higher quality and/or use some of the same parts).

You are right, it is not technically a Les Paul, but I guarantee you that any guitar player alive would look at that guitar and say "Wow what a nice Les Paul!" just because that design is so famous. Not to mention his workmanship is outstanding and it looks to be a Les Paul in every way, shape and form.

That looks aweseome. My uncle had a Les Paul Super 400 that his dad (my grandfather) gave to him. He was in a hair band in the 80's and was struggling to say the least. I hate to think how little he lost that guitar for.

A Gibson Les Paul is indeed a model made by Gibson. That said, it is so iconic in its physical form that it has become a descriptor of a general style of guitar. As Echoes said, no guitar player would describe that as anything but a Les Paul regardless of the technicalities.
