Any suggestions? I REALLY like his stuff. I like a lot of the standard Texas artists but this guy blows them all away in my opinion and is far from you standard Texas guy. So, is there anyone in a similar vein?

On a side note, I am really liking his new album Junky Star.

i like junky star but i think its to slow.

he needs to keep it upbeat to keep his live shows great. there is only a few songs on the new album that i would care to hear live.

that being said he is one of my favorite artists and i dont own a single country cd that isnt before the mid eighties..

That's because he's not a Texas guy at all. I don't know why people continue to insist that any Americana artist they like must be "Texas country" (not that you were doing this).

I mainly say that in part because I'm glad he's from Texas but also because, as you said, if someone isn't a Nashville guy and from Texas they get lumped in to just being Texas Country. He's a whole hell of a lot better than both in my opinion.

I agree Lucky, but my point was that Ryan Bingham is not from Texas. He's from New Mexico and lives in Los Angeles. I don't think he's ever lived in Texas during his music career either.

Well there you go. My buddy put me on to him and told me he was from Texas. I guess that's how the myth has perpetuated itself.

OP,
First off, figure it out!
Second, check out Hayes Carrll. He is a nice surprise in this "texas country" thing that's going on.

Hayes has a few great songs, most notably, It's A Shame. He's from the Woodlands, but sings with a lot of soul.

I was just continuing the Ryan Bingham isn't from Texas deal...it was mostly a joke.
But Hayes Carll is a young Steve Earle. Get the "Trouble in Mind" album...

Check out Justin Townes Earle, he's got a folksy country sound to him.

He HAS lived in Texas for a few years. Dude roomed with Zach Morris and ET (not Elliot) while he was at A&M.
