Songs passing the test of time

So I was thinking about songs that we still hear regularly that are 20ish+ years old that everyone knows...Don't Stop Believing, Livin on a Prayer all the way to Runaround Sue or Aint Too Proud to Beg.

My question is what are the songs today that will be those songs in another 20 years? The songs that our children will know the words to when they come on the radio and are impressed that we know the words to?

This isn't just a "whats a great song that will still be good years from now?" question. Its about massive widespread popularity across generations.

To get it started here are a few I think may be there:

Since You Been Gone- Kelly Clarkson
In Da Club- 50 Cent
I Kissed A Girl- Katy Perry

Never heard the Clarkson song...I assume it is a cover?
Haven't heard In Da Club in a while.
Heard of, but never actually heard I Kissed a Girl.

Doubt any of those will be a common song in 5 year, much less 20.

Hey Ya is a good choice.

Current pop music pretty much is the suck.

Why do you assume that? Nothing on her albums are covers. Its her most popular song and arguably the most popular pop song of the decade. The song is from 2004-05 so it has already passed the 5 year test. It can still be heard daily on pop music/mix stations

Nobody knows on here....but I'd suggest "Everybody Knows" by Sharon Robinson.

You can hear the pain in her voice and the words just cut to the heart. Yet it's a simple tune that brings you in.

Because there have been about a dozen other songs, including a couple of big hits, by the same name.

Are you really serious? You must have been living under a bridge. I'm by no means AT ALL a Kelly Clarkson fan, but I've heard that song umpteen million times. I used to wear a White Zombie t-shirt to school when I was a kid. I'm not the type to like teenybopper ****, but I've definitely heard "Since You've Been Gone." It's an insanely popular song, in fact, I'd categorize it as a titan of popular music. It's ****ing catchy; you can tell why it's been so successful.

"BYOB", System of a Down or "Wait and Bleed", Slipknot will be played long after I'm gone.

"Everlong" is already classic rock, IMO.

"Don't Stop Believin'" was a corny but cool song until "the Sopranos" resurrected it. Now it's badly overplayed.

overplayed is what you are looking for. Songs that every high school or college kid will know every word to even though the song was 20 years before them.

we already have a slew of songs from grunge era that will be the zeppelin in the future.

PJ alive, jeremy
SG black hole sun, fell on black days
AIC would, man in a box
Nirvana teen spirit, etc..
STP - plush, interstate love song
collective soul - december, shine
candlebox - far behind
a couple hootie songs, third eye blind, matchbox 20..

there are plenty songs from 90's that already do stand test of time, and will continue for decades.

from 2000's, it's a bit harder to tell.. because there wasn't an explosion of a new 'genre' like there was in early 90's..

as many of you who despise them, creed and nickelback have already endured 10 years, and their songs will continue to be played in decades to come.

I have a feeling that Soulja Boy song will have a place right after the hip hop hokey pokey in wedding receptions for a long time.

I Kissed A Girl- Katy Perry will live for years in the same way that I Touch Myself by the Divinals is still around.

A "nudge-nudge wink-wink" novelty and nothing more.

Some good ones (and some ridiculous ones) named so far. Tim's right about the 90's stuff, and I'd add some Rage to that list. There's a bunch of big pop songs from the 2000's that I think will hold up over time:

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
Killers - Mr. Brightside
Beyonce/Jigga - Crazy in Love
Jay-Z - 99 Problems; Big Pimpin
Modest Mouse - Float On
Timberlake - Cry Me a River; My Love
Strokes - Last Night
Hives - Hate to Say I Told You So
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood; Feel Good Inc.
Coldplay - Yellow; Scientist; Speed of Sound
Eminem - Real Slim Shady; Lose Yourself
Kanye - Golddigger; Love Lockdown; Jesus Walks

Hey Ya was a good one. Stankonia's already been around for 9 years, and it's got Ms. Jackson; B.O.B.; So Fresh and So Clean...

what about songs that are in popular commercials or videos? Like Jet's Are You Gonna Be My Girl?
Or that song from that wedding dancing video (Chris Brown maybe)?
Or songs that are in the YouTube's all time most watched category like Avril?
