I saw Transformers this morning, and I was surprised when they did a news cast montage within the film and President Obama was specifically mentioned by name. I have been racking my brain trying to think of any other fictional movies where the filmmakers use the actual current President’s name and I’m coming up with a blank so far. I wouldn’t call myself a movie expert, but I’ve seen my share of movies, and typically they make up a President or simply say “The President” if the plot calls for any political references at that level.

Can you think of any fictional movies where the President in the movie is also the President in real life?

Do they have to get permission to use the President’s name in a fictional work like that?

My coworker who really is a movie buff says it is common, but could only come up with the movie "Contact" where they showed clips of President Clinton.

Any others ya'll can think of? (historically based & political movies like W. don't count)

Are we talking about references to actaul Presidents or to the current President? If its the latter, HW wasn't President in 98.

Also,
I Spy, Get Smart and numerous others refered to GWB.

We're talking about a movie making a reference to the President currently in office at the time it was filmed.

The picture is from The Big Lebowski.

The President isn't referred to by name, but Lebowski is watching a press conference he is making while checking out at the grocery store.

He may not have been president at the time the movie was released, but the movie obviously took place while he was the prez.

We're talking about unchecked aggression here Dude.

I guess looking at the name of the picture doesn't do anything, either?

Airplane was in theaters during the 1980 election cycle. It featured jokes about both Reagan and Carter.

I've never seen the Big Lebowski. Besides, I thought that was a bowling movie.

Forrest Gump talks about past presidents, I knew about that. I'm talking about a movie set in the present day talking about the current president by name.

and several examples of that have been given (along with lots of awesome lebowski quotes).

The filmmakers took a Clinton press conference and used an excerpt.

At the end of American Psycho they are watching a news conference of Reagan, although the movie came out later, it was suposed to be during the 80's.

Born in East LA. Although Cheech thought the "movie star President" was John Wayne.

Contact actually caused quite a bit of controversy. Not just because of the film's use of Clinton, but also for crossing the line with actual news media personalities playing themselves in the movie (Larry King, a couple folks from CNN, etc.)

But the WH counsel actually wrote a letter to the producers protesting the movie's use of the President's image.
