Alright here is what was on the board:

_I_ING AMONG EXOTIC PLANTS AND ANIMALS

One guy guesses living among exotic plants and animals...not a bad guess I imagine.

Everybody else just freaks out and refuses to try and solve the puzzle. When it gets to them they choose to spin vs. solve. At least take a guess ppl. They all had built up a ton of money and as you may or may not know you only keep the money if you solve the puzzle. Since they had all built up a lot of money already all they needed to do was solve. There was no reason to try and get more. So they each choose to spin instead of solve. Incredibly an amazing string of lose a turn (w/ an occasional bankruptcy) hits on the wheel. They cycle through each person THREE frickin times and the guy was the only one to guess and he only guessed once. Finally one of the chicks spins the wheel and lands on the narrow sliver of pie labled "ONE MILLION DOLLARS". To get this cool million you need to correctly guess a letter on the board, solve the current puzzle and then solve the final puzzle at the end of the show. So she guesses H!!! Genius! She is correct. So now we have:

HI_ING AMONG EXOTIC PLANTS AND ANIMALS

So what does she choose to do next? You guessed it spin the ****ing wheel. As if a million dollars isn't enough, as if the 10K she had already accumulated wasn't enough...she had to spin again. I honestly think these ppl were just freaked out, I don't think they were being greedy trying to squeeze out a couple more dollars. They honestly didn't know the answer and they were just cracking under pressure. So she spins again and I'm praying to holy hell she lands on "Lose A Turn" or even better "Bankruptcy". As luck would have she lands on a dollar amount, something like $300. I'm thinking the only way she screws this up is she guesses a "D". But just when I think things can't get any more F'd up, she guesses "W". I **** you not. "W"!!!!!!! That would give us:

"HIWING AMONG EXOTIC PLANTS AND ANIMALS"

Hiwing? WTF? What does that mean?

The phrase as you've probably guessed was "HIKING AMONG EXOTIC PLANTS AND ANIMALS". Listen I can understand not being able to guess "_I_ING", I can even understand not being able to guess "HI_ING", but I can't fathom how someone would choose to put a "W" there with a million dollars on the line.

Needless to say the guy that originally guessed "LIVING..." was next and he correctly guessed "HIKING" and won a trip to Costa Rica and went to the finals.

Most amazingly dumb thing I've ever seen on TV. It was right up there with the chick on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" who when asked what was biggest went with Elephant over The Moon.

Again, nothing wrong with this. I've never heard anyone utter that phrase before, but its reasonable enough.

Now if you would've guessed the W along w/ her then you should consider suicide.

Holden, are you like 65 years old or something? My parents are in their 70s and love the Wheel!

I watched that episode today (I'm visiting my parents this week) and I guessed Hiding.

The fact one million dollars was on the board somewhat negates the stupidity of those choosing to spin. Especially since they didn't know the answer to the puzzle yet (which of course isn't that bright). But the strategy decision given that lack of solving ability, I can live with.

Once the million is hit, yeah that was really, really, freaking dumb.

Why would anyone guess HIDING when it clearly didn't contain a D (see that D was already called with AND)?

BULBS

the next girl solved it and the girl who was stuck looked confused, like she had never heard "by the dawn's early light".

You are giving these Mensas entirely too much credit. I can't tell you how many times someone will choose a letter that was just chosen by the previous contestant and wasn't in the clue.

Holden, it sounds like your house is CRAZY around dinner time, with the Wheel and so forth.

The worst one I ever saw was as follows:
ORIGINAL FORMULA CO_ _

Dude guessed "Original Formula CORN". This was in the mid-80's when the debate over New Coke and Original Formula Coke was a big thing, so it was extra mind-boggling.

i was watching family fued once. they had the two people up at the podium. the question was "name something you'd expect to buy at a supermarket". lady buzzes in and gets the number one answer, so the host goes over to her family. he gets to the first guy, and the guy gets something that's on the board, so no strikes. host gets to grandma. grandma's answer? "appliance"

I saw an old lady guess 'Y' three times in one puzzle. There were no Y's. She guessed twice and on the third time she bought a vowel and guessed Y. They had to tell her that Y was not a vowel and that there were definitely not any Y's on the board. Amazingly she got lucky and somehow ended up in the final round. What was her first letter of choice? Y

She did not win the final round. I was dumbfounded by how the hell she got on the show in the first place.

That's right. All letters were exposed. How did she miss it, you ask?

She guessed the following:

The Atlanta Falcons
