Which artist do you think wrote the best lyrics this year? Please clarify if its a whole album, one song, or just a phrase.
Whole album: Thrice - The Alchemy Index
All four volumes were brilliantly crafted. Each six song cd was composed to give visions and sounds of the four elements of the planet (fire, water, air, earth). All of the lyrics in each album have multiple meanings. Each one has a symbolic meaning to Dustin (vocalist) as well as a meaning to its respective element. The coolest thing about the lyrics structure though.. was that the final song on each disc was written in the form of a sonnet, depicting the relationship of man with each of the particular elements. Each of these songs is in iambic pentameter, with a concluding rhyming couplet. These final couplets also contain the same vocal melody and chord progression as each other, although they are in different keys.
The best example is their song from the Earth album "The Lion and the Wolf"
Individual song: Protest The Hero - Sequoia Throne
The whole album "has to do with goddess worship, and how there has been this degendering of the Lord and Savior, and the suppressed feminine. A lot of it is based in Genghis Khan and old Irish Mythology, about the rise and fall of the Goddess of the forest. [The theme] can be more appreciated by more people. If I had to reduce it to its simplest form, the concept is about the re-emerging of goddess worship and the erosion of faith in scientific process." - Arif Mirabdolbaghi (bassist)
The song Sequoia Throne in particular talks about aliens and how they have been villain-ized in society. Then it goes on to describe how they are the least of our worries and we should look in the mirror.

quote:
The lion's outside of your door
The wolf's in your bed
The lion's claws are sharpened for war
The wolf's teeth are red
And what a monstrous sight he makes,
Mocking man's best friend
When both the wolf and lion crave
The same thing in the end
The lion's outside of your door
The wolf's in your bed
The wolf, he howls
The lion does roar
The wolf lets him in
The lion runs in through the door
The real fun begins
As they both rush upon you and
Rip open your flesh
The lion eats his fill and then
The wolf cleans up the mess
The lion's outside of your door
The wolf's in your bed

quote:
Did you come here to kill, or did you come here to die?
Did we really think that spaceships would descend from the sky?
Bending light and beaming forth across space-time
to see us scared in the reflection of their oil black eyes?
And stalk us as a predator like our movies imply
They're not the ones who come to kill us
Come to fill us full of lead
They're not the ones who hate us
And they are not the ones who mutilate our animals
Or travel through the stars.
They're not the ones who cause us harm - we are!
We are, we are, we are
We are still-life in cold blood and we feel nothing.
We are still-life in cold blood and we feel nothing.
Hell-bent on heaven
Hell-bent on heaven
Hell-bent on heaven
Hell-bent on heaven
While our righteous men are stuffing corpses full of **** and faith,
We are, we are, we are still-life
We are, we are, we are still-life
We are, we are, we are
Still-life
They're not the ones who cause us harm
We are, we are
(Did you come here to kill, or did you come here to die?)
We are still-life in cold blood
We are still-life in cold blood
And we feel
We feel
Stuffing corpses full of **** and faith,
They bloviate about a future beyond the moon.
To bring about another planet's doom
To discover peaceful life and beat our war-drum to its tune
Unless my prayers are answered
Our end is coming soon.
