Exactly tanya. We are paid for the days we work--on a contract. Few other jobs are contract jobs--meaning there is only a narrow window we can change jobs--and it is about to close for this year.
We sign contacts frequently before a district sets its pay scale, and our actual teaching assignment can change--I have had them change it the first week of clsses.
But the kids are wonderful and keep us alive in a way few other jobs do.
It is only that one time a month, when I pay bills and have little left over, that I wish it paid better. Central Texas has some of the most depressed salaries in the state, and as long as most districts don't pay well, they can all get away with not paying well. In the metroplex there is a bidding war of sorts for teachers so the pay is high.
But if I lived in a city I would be a recluse because I abhor driving in traffic--it makes me a total nervous wreck--so I would have my little path to work and home and probably do little else. not a good place for me. I grew up in a town of under two hundred people, thirty miles from the nearest grocery store. So Temple or Killeen are HUGE cities for me.
Corpus is the largest I have ever lived in, and the traffic there was not bad--even ten years ago when it was a shopping destination when we lived in Laredo.
I hope to teach 12 more years if my health holds up and it stays the plan for my life. I see no reason to retire and quit doing something that only makes me feel good--until the time comes I can't do the job well, or I am too ill to do it.
Now the plan for my life could change, and I try to be open to that. I may apply for a brazos valley job because my heart feels like that is home, but I am not sure that is where I am supposed to be. Salary though is not the reason since any increase in pay there is offset by the increase in cost of living.
