depends on if the county where you're registered has stricter emissions standards. I'm from Liberty County, which borders Harris County. Harris and all surrounding counties have higher emission standards than most of the state. I can go to any one of those counties and get my car inspected, but I can't get it inspected in Brazos. does this help?

Incorrect. As Aggiecheer pointed out, there are rules with respect to emissions standards. If you live and reside in any county that has emissions standards, they will not give you an inspection in ANY other Texas county. The fees are much higher and the restrictions more constrictive in these counties.

for instance, if you live in Houston and try to get an inspection in Tom Green County (West Texas), they will ask for you to show where you live (insurance and license). If you are from a county that requires emissions testing, you cannot get it there. If you live in a county that does not require emissions testing, you can then get your inspection in any other Texas County. You would just be stupid then to get it in a county that tests for emissions, because you will pay twice as much as you should have.

At one time, you didn't even have to get the car inspected in Texas. For many counties, that may still be the case, now.

For example, I used to regularly get my car inspected in Oklahoma even though I had Texas stickers. It was perfectly legal.

Of course, these days you can't get your car inspected in Oklahoma -- they don't do vehicle inspections any more.

they may have changed this recently, but last year, I got my truck inspected in brazos county. the car is registered in tarrant county (ft. worth) but they let me sign something stating why i was getting inspected in brazos county (school was a valid excuse, apparently)
