SAN FERNANDO, California — A pair of pit bulls chased students into a restroom at a middle school Friday morning and mauled an 11-year-old girl, police said.

"The dogs immediately attacked her," said San Fernando Police Chief Anthony Alba. "She had dog bites all over her body."

The girl, whose identity was not immediately released, managed to run out of the restroom and a custodian hit the dogs with a trash can and they broke off the attack, Alba said.

...

The 18-year-old owner of the dogs, Orlando Vasquez, was arrested and held in lieu of $25,000 bail.

A newborn infant was mauled by a family dog in Hull early yesterday morning, state officials said.

The baby girl was 6 or 7 days old and had been home from the hospital about three days when her family's dog, a Labrador retriever mix, attacked her sometime between 4 and 6 a.m., said Denise Monteiro, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Social Services, which is investigating the mauling.

The baby was taken to South Shore Medical Center and then transported immediately to Children's Hospital in Boston, where she was listed in critical condition yesterday afternoon, Monteiro said.

''On the surface, it looks like a tragic accident," Monteiro said. ''A case of a jealous dog."

The infant is the first child for the parents, who are in their early 20s and who were not identified by DSS.

Hull police refused to comment on the case yesterday.

An official briefed on the case said the baby suffered bruises all over her body, some severe cuts, and puncture wounds on her head that caused her brain to bleed.

Toddler Recovering After Dog Bites Off Part Of Face
Boy To Begin Series Of Plastic Surgeries This Summer

POSTED: 1:12 pm EDT May 23, 2006

CLEVELAND -- A 2-year-old Auburn Township boy suffered a terrible injury when he was attacked by a dog while playing in his yard.

NewsChannel5's Alicia Booth reported that despite loosing a big chunk of his face in the attack, Zachary Conover is fighting back and is on his was to recovery.

Zachary was injured when he went to give his cousin's golden retriever a hug one day.

"The dog then reacted and knocked Zach to the ground and bit once. The whole transaction happened in about three or four seconds," said Zachary's mother, Dawn Conover.

With that bite, the middle of Zach's face was gone.

"It was very gruesome, it just didn't seem real. I was looking at him thinking, how could that really be happening? How could that be real?" said Dawn Conover.

Zach ended up at MetroHealth Medical Center, barely alive and in the care of a team of doctors and nurses.

"His was so dramatic and so severe that it was difficult to ascertain what that injury was," said MetroHealth pediatric intensivist Micahel Anderson.

"It was not, what is he going to look like later? It was, is he going to make it?" said Zach's father, Matthew Conover.

Zachary not only made it, but he's back to being to same rambunctious little boy he was before the attack, and it has only been about eight months since he lay unconscious for 27 days.

First, doctors had to save his life, and then they had to help him heal. He still has a long way to go, and will have to endure several plastic surgeries, but the hard part is over.

"That's the joy of pediatrics. Kids are resilient, they bounce back, they heal," said Anderson.

"I just think, thank God. Thank God that he's with us," said Dawn Conover.

Zachary will start having a series of plastic surgeries in July. Doctors say they should be able to completely restore his face in time for kindergarten.

Zach still loves dogs, and apparently doesn't remember the attack

Pit bull attacked by 'Toy'
• Warden not surprised: 'They stand their ground, those little dogs'

By Dan Moran
Staff Writer

WAUKEGAN — Animal Warden Tina Fragassi said she was not surprised when her office fielded a report Thursday about a 10-pound Pomeranian attacking an 80-pound pit bull.

"They stand their ground, those little dogs," she said, describing how one of her relatives has a small mixed-breed dog that charges her own pit bull and Labrador every time the three dogs cross paths.

That's basically what happened Thursday afternoon at a Sunset Avenue apartment complex, where Garry Laffredi said he was walking his 2-year-old pit bull Capone when a neighbor's Pomeranian came running at them.

"(Capone's) not a bad guy. He's real friendly. He's people friendly," Laffredi said. "He loves other dogs. (But) this little Pomeranian ran out and starts biting him on the foot."

Pomeranians, which are classified as Toy dogs by the American Kennel Club, can be as small as three pounds and resemble a fox in appearance, generally having a bushy orange coat and pointed ears.

Laffredi said the Pomeranian bit Capone's foot hard enough "to draw blood" also managed to nick Capone on the top of the head as he tried to pull the pit bull away on a leash.

Eventually, Laffredi said, Capone "grabbed the dog and more or less set him off to the side" before the two dogs were separated.

Citations issued

Animal control officers called to the scene reported that Laffredi told them the Pomeranian also bit him on the hand two weeks ago, but he chose not to report it at the time. The owner of the Pomeranian was issued four citations for Thursday's incident — failure to prevent a dog bite, owning a dog running at large, not possessing a dog license and not having updated rabies shots.
Each citation comes with a $25 fine if paid within 30 days. Fragassi said in cases of a first-time animal-to-animal bite with no current rabies shots, the animal is not seized but the owner must have the dog checked by a veterinarian for rabies after 10 days.

The owner of the Pomeranian declined to speak about the incident, describing it as an unfortunate episode that she wanted to put behind her.

I could go on, but you get the point. All happened very recently yet nobody posts them. Why? Oh, I forgot, not a pit bull doing the attacking.

As if Pitt Bulls aren't any more dangerous than Pomeranians or Black Labs..

I guess since the news media has a thing about getting rid of pitt bulls, that's the breed they report on...

they're nothing but trolls and the arguments have been discussed way too may times

You forgot Golden Retrievers. Those guys have a tendency to bite off faces, don't want to leave them out of the dangerous breed list so we don't forget to bash them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE dog lover. And yes, I could probably get real attached to a nice Pitt. But I don't trust them. In fact, if someone moved into my immediate neighborhood with them and I had small kids, my kids wouldn't play in the front yard any more. We just might move to a different area and hope for better luck with neighbors who don't have dogs that have a tendency to be bred for fighting.

i.e. - the situation above. An 18 year old owming two Pitts that chase young girls into an adjacent school and attack one of them?

Sorry, but I wouldn't mind if the breed was banned and all female Pitts were to be sterilized.

I have a feeling that most young families with a 10, 8 and 6 year old were looking for a dog, they wouldn't choose a pitt bull over a lab or golden.

Nothing against you or your dog. This is my opinion. Sorry it stinks to some. Maybe some agree with me? I know some humane societies won't accept them.

the enigma
How long do you want to ignore this user?
just another example of the media telling you what they want you to believe. I for one believe it is the owners that make the breed bad. Dont get me wrong, there are bad pits but the owners have alot to do with how well disciplined they are.

cont...
if I pull on my boxer's ears he knows that I am trying to get him to play and will "attack" me but it my 4 month old son does it he just sits and takes it cause he knows I will thrash him it he does anything.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
True. Bad owners breed them for fighting.

Let me ask you, if you were out running tonight, and a collie came running up to you, would you freak out as bad if it was a pitt bull?

The one industry that relies on statistics for its entire existence is the insurance industry. When you buy homeowners insurance they have a list of dogs they ask if you own. Check that list and get back to me if you're still unclear about which dogs are the higher risk.
the enigma
How long do you want to ignore this user?
blauser - to be honest I wouldnt freak out if any breed came up to me. Ive seen both the good and bad in alot of dogs and what I have seen has been about equal.

Goose - sure "statistics dont lie" but they sure can be spun. with the popularity of the breed with lower income people and how they are treated and then how often you see them loose on the streets, Im not surprised the stats say what they do.
