So, I work for a state agency and we have an American and a Texas flag in our office. On top of the American flag is a flying eagle. On top of the Texas flag is a spear.

Anyone know what the spear symbolizes?

*

The use of flying flags as a form of communication, grew from the requirements of ancient battlefields
*

Uniforms were not worn in bygone days so shields were painted with emblems to identify Friend or Foe
*

Warriors also needed to know where their leaders were so the custom of carrying a pole was adopted and the idea of flags was born
*

An emblem such as a shield or religious device was attached to the pole for identification
*

The emblems were also used for identity and to cover suits of armour - Coats of Arms were born!
*

Emblems were therefore the forerunners of the modern flag
*

The Romans were the first to use a cloth flag
*

The first Roman flag was square and fastened to cross bars at the end of spears
*

The idea of fastening a flag to the side of a pole soon followed - Fascinating info about the history

It has nothing to do with Texas, it is traditional for all flags, the US one just got the upgrade to an eagle.

Why, thanks ENGag. For a while there I thought the only person I had amused was myself.

The American flag requies an eagle...all other flags, not just the Texas, use the spear head.

Um, I am not entirely sure that the Eagle is a requirement. Actually, I am going to come right out and say that I don't think you know what you are talking about.

all other flags don't use the spear head. And according to the lady at the flag company, most Texas flag sets she sells use a star on the top, not the spear.

The end of the flagpole is in the middle of the air.

yep, i was only on active duty as an officer for 21 years, and I'm certainly no CPA, so WTF do i know about the American flag???

The flag code may be silent on a "requirement" for using an eagle, but that's the protocol we used in the Army. Spears were used for everything else...my apologies if the quatermaster didn't buy stars for the Texas flag.

so much for Tradition...
