Mrs. B-1 83 (aka Teacher Wife 82) and I are headed there on Sunday, then spending the night at a nice B & B in Fritztown.

If the weather's right, which it should be for you guys, it is a truly great place.

I don't have any advice on Enchanted Rock. Don't be one of the clueless tourists that walk up and down Main Street with no regard for traffic.

Nice place. Extremely easy hiking all the way around the park (including to the top of the rock). Camping at the primitive sites is pretty fun, too. You should try it sometime.

You should have a good time, though.

We're not going for the "primitive" camping thing. I'm thinking whirlpool, a bottle of wine, and "other things" that evening after the climb and hike. It is about 3 hours from Uvalde.

That is actually where my brother in law proposed to my sister. He popped the question when they got to the top and had the view going on.

It's probably about 2.5-3 hours from here (B/CS). It's on a highway between Llano and Fredericksburg.

back when I was in high school, me and my friends used to go rock climbing there pretty frequently.

I've still got my "Dome Driver's Manual" (the book with all of the rock climbs there).

There are quite a few bolted routes, but you need to place your own protection on most of the climbs.

It's about 70 miles west of Austin, so CS to Austin + about an hour or so.

I would echo that you need to get there early because they are limiting the # of visitors each day to help control erosion. From what I understand, on weekends when the weather is nice, it can shut down as early as 11am or so. Maybe even earlier since it's spring break.

It's really not much of a hike to the top, but it's worth it. If you're doing some rock climbing, though, that's a lot of fun.

Great facilities. I had the opportunity to camp there when the temperature differential of night and day caused the rock to groan. Eerie sounds and a camp fire, great place for ghost stories.

Easy hikes, pretty good rock climbing and rappelling.

I noticed on the website that they have been known to close the park due to crowds. I'm hoping to call ahead for a reservation even if this is just a day trip.

I hiked to the top and then we went down the wrong side of the mountain and ended up on the repellers side. It was lots of fun though!

If it's a day visit (without a campground reservation), I'm pretty sure you are hosed on reservations. Getting there early is your only option. I would think getting a camping or picnic area reservation at this point would be tough.

Getting there at 8am might not be out of the question. I've been there during Spring Break and it's packed. Plus the weather has been good lately, so that'll bring out lots of people.

Get there early and bring a jacket for the morning. It can get pretty windy up on top of the main dome.

If you're feeling adventurous, have someone point you to the cave crack. That's fun to crawl through.

I don't think Enchanted Rock takes reservations for day trippers. And the filling up for the day is no empty threat. Still, better spring break than labor day.

As for the park, it has some pretty well developed facilities. The back of the rock has a nice cave also, though it is more of a crawl than a walk. If you are staying overnight, the rock heats up during the day and then at night you can lay on the hot rock with the cool air. People pay for that in Europe.

Last time I was in Fredricksburg they had opened a new microbrew place within the last few years. Pretty good stuff. But it is funny to see all the husbands lining the street with the same plastic cups as the wives are in the craft stores.

The last visit was pretty crowded: they would let one car in as one was leaving. Long wait.

My boy's scout troop camped regularly there. Always had a good time.
