I was coming back from lunch headed south on 75 around mockingbird at about 1pm. All of a sudden everybody slams on their brakes. The girl that was with me and I noticed that about 20 cars ahead every lane just stopped and past that it was wide open. A minute or so later we get up to the scene and in the middle 2 lanes, the bike was in several pieces.
I was in the right hand lane since I thought I was going to have to exit and they had pulled the cop to that shoulder. I was within 15 feet of him and he was laying on his stomach with his head turned towards us with his helmet still on. His face was Navy Blue and he was laying in a pool of blood. There were about 6-8 people there around him and nobody was attempting to resuscitate him. It was pretty obvious that he was gone.
On the 6pm news, they just had a 10 sec quick report that someone leading a funeral procession had lost control and his status was unknown. I imagine they are notifying next of kin. My niece was about 2 minutes behind me and by the time she got to the scene, the ambulance had scooped him up.
I'm sure there will be more on the 10 o'clock news since they completely shut down 75 south for a while.
The image of his face keeps popping into my head throughout the day. I've never seen somebody that blue in the face and obviously dead.
I said a prayer for his family because at that point, they were completely unaware.
