I have about six gallons of peanut oil left over from frying turkeys over the holidays. Anyone have suggestions for where, in Houston, I can take it to be disposed of? BFI refused to take it this morning and could not give me any alternatives.
It's funny, they want you to recycle and properly dispose of that type of stuff but they never make it easy for you to be able to do that sort of stuff.
Some communities (usually near large chemical companies) have "household hazardous material" days ... Lake Jackson / Clute / Freeport do. They'll take old batteries, used oil, paint, thinners, etc. Ours is twice a year, and there's also a recycling center (on FM 523 between Clute and Angleton) that will take it anytime.
Rehide it in your trash better - one gallon at a time in a fairly full trash bag that is a good outdoor strong lawn and leaf bag. They will never know.
Unfortunately all the collection dates listed are in the past, but if they've had one they'll have another.
Most restaurants have a grease trap that they empty routinely. Check with a McDonalds or Wendys or other fast food place ... they might let you dump it there.
if i remember correctly the ihop on university has a seperate dumpster for their grease. i saw it as i was walking past to chipotle. if all other alternatives are exhausted you could try that...
Find a restaurant place it outside their back door and they can add it to their recycling. When I managed a restaurant in BCS, I would find "donations" all the time. I didn't care because a company paid us for the used oil that they would collect from us, more money for me!
We're not talking motor oil here. Since when is peanut oil considered hazardous waste? Isn't it biodegradable? Since it is a kitchen waste not unlike bacon grease or other cooking oils, what's the harm of lubricating the inside of the garbage disposal with the stuff.
