A little help, here... I'm looking to continue the indoctrination of my two daughters by sending them back to Texas for Summer camp [we live in California, but they're by-God going to A&M ].

Anyone know of a couple quality, fun camps back that-a-ways into which I may investigate sending them? I'm looking for something with some structure & a variety of activities, maybe some tradition, and for sure, horses. Any help will be appreciated!

I recommend Camp Northstar. They have a wacky activities director there that's lots of fun. One of your kids may feel alittle left out at first, but then they'll win the cross country race at the end and he/she will be really popular.

p.s. All the really good looking girls will still go out with the guys from Camp Mohawk...'cause they got all the money.

I hear good things about Camp Mystic from all the girls in my family who went. If you are interested in Christian oriented camps, I highly reccommend T Bar M, Pine Cove, Sky Ranch, and Balconess Springs.

I grew up going to Camp Allen and loved it: http://www.campallen.org And since it was so close to College Station, I just had to swing by A&M and check out after serving as a counselor one week...

Camp Lonestar at LaGrange, its the best camp ever, its where I go and I love it sooo much, how old are they? If they are 13 or older, send them to "discovery" its the best experience, I loved it.

I attended and worked at both Sky Ranch and Camp Mystic...

I would start them out going to Sky Ranch (shorter sessions) and then after they go to Sky Ranch for one or two years, send them to Camp Mystic for four weeks.

That is what I did....2 years at Sky, 4 at Mystic....Then went back to work at both!

Absolutely loved it, and you know they will be well taken care of.

Camp Longhorn is actually really awesome and I had a great time as when i was kid there. I know that at just as many people that were aggies worked there or went to camp as there were longhorns. It really is a great camp.

My sister and i went to mystic in the 50's and my daughter went in the late80-90's. I can truly say Mystic is a wonderful place to develop and expand Christian values, tradition and self confidence. They have a 2 week session that is not even anything like the 4 week. Depending on your children's personality, age etc. would determine the choice. i sent my daughter to the two week session and then the four week. She said there was absolutely no comparison. There isn't the time to develop the bond that forms with the four week session. It is easier to get in via the 2 week session. some families register their kids when they are quite young. Mystic has much more structure than Camp Longhorn. my son went there and had a blast but for girls my preference would be Mystic.(Waldemar is nearby and a very nice camp but somewhat more upscale than Mystic. I still prefer Mystic)
Dallas girls go mostly to one or the other. Houston has a large number attending Mystic and Longhorn. I don't know about attendence from Houston at Waldemar.

I was active in Camp Longhorn for a while and then worked as counselor during college. It is a bit pricey but a great, great camp for kids. The camp is based upon strong morals and group comraderie. Lots of Aggies there too, even with Tex being a big horn. There are 2 camps: Inks Lake and Indian Springs. Indian Springs is the horseback riding camp. I was at Inks so I don't know much about it, but I've only heard great stories. It's something your daughters (and you and your spouse) will really look forward to every summer. And they'll always remember it and make life long friendships. Beautiful area and great people. Also they provide charter travel from everywhere in the state if for some reason you're not close to the Burnet/Austin area and can't drive them yourself (although if you can, I definitely would make the trip). Ok I'll shut up, good luck

I grew up going to Slumber Falls Camp in New Braunfels. My parents actually met there when they were counselors.

It's a Christian camp, and is operated by the United Church of Christ, but it extremely non-denominational in its preaching. It's right on the Guadalupe river. An amazing place. I'm still friends with folks I met when I was 10 years old.

My brother and I both went there back in the late 80s and early 90s. I wanna say we went for 5 years - it's a 3-week camp for boys and girls on lake LBJ in Granite Shoals (outside of Marble Falls). It's an awesome place with lots of memories for the both of us, the best of which is seeing Jerry Jeff Walker for my first time. His daughter was at the girls' camp and he came over to play at our "torchlight ceremony" one night.

Only reason I know about it is because of the location -- I grew up not far from the camp. I did have a number of friends when we were at A&M who served as counselors. They always had good things to say about it.

Check out all of the summer camps in the Texas Hill Country near Kerrville. Camp Mystic, Arrowhead for girls, Stewart, La Junta for boys are all great places. Sessions usually run 3-4-5 weeks depending on what you want. I am really glad I spent four weeks of my summers growing up out there.
