Slept like a dead pharaoh

Woke up way before alarm. Went back to sleep. Wife woke me up later making noise prepping the dog food to feed puppies. My alarm wasn't set for some reason so that's good!

Busy day ahead

BMW driver behind me almost rear-ended my car this morning when I braked hard to avoid squishing a rabbit. They drove pretty poorly the whole way this morning but then again I already said "BMW driver"

Pizza tonight. Maybe some live music somewhere or maybe go for a long sweaty walk like I did last night. Cooler weather at some point would be nice

Beautiful late summer day in west Georgia/east Alabama. Critters fed and coffee made.
Because all good day starts with good coffee.
Make it a good one in spite of what humankind and the Houthis are up to.

• Hoping for a quiet day.

I can't image losing my father when I was 14 years old. That had to have been very tough.

Ironically, my father was also born in 1919...20 days later...on October 1.

Work from home day, dog asleep somewhere. Laundry and work. Iron Maiden/Megadeth tomorrow.

Thinking of going back to Lyft driving.
Motorcycle ride and/or shooting guns this weekend.

• Waiting to hear back about the second interview that I had two days ago and the first that I had yesterday
• If neither of those pan out there are a host of other things ready to apply for
• I have a dozen bags of clothes that don't fit the kids anymore and other stuff ready to donate tomorrow
• Angel siting next to my chair in the office, getting all the ear rubs this morning
• Maybe, probably gonna rain today? All I know is that whoever is moving in next door needs to get their crap together or else it's all going to get dumped on because, Summer in Charleston
• Game watching party with the local AFS group tomorrow, that should be fun!

To what location did you take this dump? Did you take it to an actual dump?

I need to go to computer shop #1 and get my 2020 vintage PC and brand new NVIDIA GPU. The shop was absolutely unable to get them to work together. Will take all of it to computer shop #2 and give them a chance. I can't start working with AI at home until I have a 16 GB GPU installed. If the GPU can't be made to work with the PC I have, then I have to buy a whole new PC. I *really* don't want to do that.

PC parts are *absurdly expensive* right now. Ironically, it's because so much production is going towards data centers and apparently very little towards consumers. Memory costs about 400% or 500% what it was a year or two ago. Storage has gotten bad too.

I feel your pain. My seven year old PC has started to BSOD a couple of times a week. Pricing out systems has been…not fun, so I'll limp along for awhile.

Those are like new compared to what I'm running over here. The laptop isn't bad: HP15-X with a Ryzen 5 4600H + 2TB of storage

Desktops though,
#1: Overclocked I5-3570K, GTX-760, around 16TB of storage since it's basically a media center PC
#2: Overclocked Quad Core (Q6600), 2TB of storage and I forget what kind of video card since everything is from 2007-2009.

Probably some extra nonsensical doodad some hoostank put on the mobo to keep you from upgrading so they can get you to order an entirely new machine. If that's an HP workstation I guarantee that's what's going on.

This thread reminds me, I've got a bunch of computer parts in a big plastic bin that I need to dig through. I am a compulsive needless computer upgrader so I might have some 2024-ish parts in there. I hope I have some RAM.

Shop #2 was OUTSTANDING!! They're my new go to shop. They weren't able to get the card working correctly, but the owner booted to Windows using the onboard video while the NVIDIA GPU was in the box. He was then able to switch the video from onboard to the GPU. Windows won't boot while on the GPU though. It gets past the HP BIOS splash screen and then sits indefinitely. Windows never starts loading.

The owner thinks my BIOS can't handle the card, and I suspect that he's right. Unfortunately, it's already got the latest, and probably final BIOS that HP put out for the machine. This guy was an incredible well of information, and he did get a 24GB PCIe 4 NVIDIA card to boot to Windows on my workstation without issue, but my card is PCIe 5 (and the mobo is only PCIe 3). It's all supposed to be backwards-compatible, but it just doesn't work.

Thinking I'm going to sell my 5060 Ti as open box and buy a PCIe 4 16 GB NVIDIA card used.

I appreciate it when sales reps provide me with context or background regarding our contracting history with a client, I truly do. I do not appreciate it when that context takes the form of forwarding me thirty emails in the span of an hour after 5:00 on a Friday.

Crazy stuff. I ordered an ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB off of Amazon on July 27 for $573.31 plus shipping and tax. Today Amazon is selling the same card for $809.99. I've shopped PC parts for nearly 40 years. I've never seen a market like this. I don't think I'll have any problem selling it.

I think I'm going to buy an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB GPU. I can get one open box on ebay for under $600. I've found three different people online who have my PC with this GPU. Some guy in Sweden is selling my PC with this GPU installed. I'm much more comfortable that this GPU will be compatible for me.

Lordy that's expensive! I'm just gonna stick with my good-for-2014 build.
