Shipleys is a mediocre donut chain. The only reason people are convinced they like it is because it originated in Houston. Any hole in the wall donut/kolache place is just as good.

Agree. Krispy Kreme is overrated and overhyped. I think it's not any better than donuts from Walmart. I think there is a reason why they pulled out of Houston.

Not major health reasons but wanted to lose a few more lbs after losing 30 by quitting drinking sugar sodas. Unfortunately donuts are pure sugar and addictive. I used to consume way too much sugar and was on the precipice of type 2 diabetes.

I read an awesome story about these random donut places that are all hole in the wall dumps in small towns run by Asians. Turns out it's very much a turnkey business cartel type thing that sets up immigrant families to run their own business on the cheap. It's like the crooked Irish cop pipeline in NYC in the 1800s or how an unusual amount of Patels wind up running hotels. Quite fascinating. My brother had a very good friend owning/running one of these joints for a while and dude would be up at 3am to get the donuts going for the day, and his whole family worked there. Dude was pretty damn well off in a short time all off of shoveling donuts, fritters, blanketed pigs, etc. into the gaping maw of fat Texans.

While your second statement is very true, your first is entirely way too hyperbolic. KK is good, though not the best of course. On par with Shipleys honestly.

What Shipleys messes up and why I always thought they were a yankee chain anyhow, was their "kolaches". Their attempts at klobasniky were horrid. Mass produced garbage with a ****ty little nasty weinie to bread ratio of at least 1:5. F'ing warcrime in my book. If you aren't pulling off a 1:1 or at least close to, GTFO.

I found one in deep East Dallas just passing by and I am almost killed like 6 people whipping across the highway to hit the exit. 100% worth it. Taste of my childhood out in west Texas. I had zero idea they were any even out out the Permian Basin until I saw that one going like 90. Soooo good.

Yep, grew up with one down the street so it became what I think a donut should taste like. There are a few around Houston

I'm in the middle of 4 Shipleys locations. May have to drive through one on the way to work this morning, just because……

KK glazed donuts are so gross. I grew up in NJ on Dunkin Donuts and prefer that style. I would rather eat a jelly donut from HEB than Krispy Kreme. Everyone In the south was crazy for KK. Shipley is meh.

Shipley's cinnamon twist and Krispy Kreme old fashioned blueberry are the top tier donuts.

Kinda like with pizza, I also have a special place in my heart for bad donuts. QT chocolate iced donuts are like Dominos or Digiorno. They're not good but they are somehow still awesome in their own way.
