All the time.

Typically the nicer you are to a person the more likely that person will be a jerk to you.

It is a lack of morals.

They'll ask for help from you because they are too lazy to do the task themselves and view you as just another resource to get whatever reward they want. Essentially, they never needed your help because they planned for you to save their butt all along.

Wait, I could have been collecting fees for what I've been doing naturally for years?!

My MIL is that type of person.

She lives with my BIL and SIL, has the entire 1,000 sf walkout basement to herself and doesn't pay any rent or utilities. She complains constantly to my wife about things my BIL does even though he has put a roof over her head for going on 20 years now. Between social security and her small retirement savings she gets about $30k a year but never seems to have any money even though she has no living expenses.

Last month she complained that she had to pay the Chevy dealer over $1,100 to replace the headlights on her car because they were dim and she was having trouble seeing to drive at night (rural NC)

I asked her why she didn't just order some LED replacements from Amazon and have my BIL install them. She said she wasn't letting him touch her car because was replacing the water pump on his own car and broke a bolt and had to drill it out. Well, the water pump in question was on a 20 year old car with over 300,000 miles, bolts are gonna break. She just lives to complain and martyr herself.

I've always tried to politely not accept favors. I think I probably insulted some good people in doing so. Accepting favors always made me feel uncomfortable. Is that bad? Serious question.
