I don't have this app, so I don't know the ins and outs of it. What exactly are they scared the Chinese are going to gain from us? My wife watches a bunch of dumb makeup videos and other dumb ***** How is that a security risk? What am I missing? Is it just major trends of all users?

Anything on your phone/computer that's connected to the internet is a security risk. This is a Chinese one. Ever seen a Chinese trojan horse? I have once but Asian porn is all blurred out so it didn't do much for me.

China has a national security law which requires all Chinese companies to work with the Chinese version of the National Security Agency to spy on adversaries at the request of the Chinese government. TicTok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.

The servers for US users are supposedly exclusively located in Virginia and operated by Oracle, but the Chinese government effectively owns the algorithm and can direct ByteDance to send user data straight to the Chinese government.

There is significant evidence pointing to Chinese manipulation of the algorithm to promote unrest in the United States, promote certain political points of view, and to spy on users. One of the longer-term fears is Chinese being able to collect the data of all the teenage users in particular and use it to manipulate, blackmail, or doxx them 10 or 15 years from now as they enter the workforce, particularly government jobs.

And it isn't about free speech at all. It could stay open if they sold it to non-Chinese company. But ByteDance won't sell.

So let's make ByteDance sell to a company based in a country friendly to the US. We won't do anything to strengthen online privacy laws though. When TikTok's new US-friendly owner is breached, their users' data will wind up on the darkweb available for purchase by the PRC, or anyone else that wants it. Problem solved?

Read about the differences between the app in China versus here and then say there's nothing nefarious.

Bc any one of us could have info or have a friend that has info...exploitable by China.

Politicians usually give in and just take the $$ thrown their way.

I would order Chinese takeout online and sometimes it would arrive two weeks late with Chinese newspaper as packing material. Two weeks! and they wanted an 18% tip added on. I know they were routing my orders through a restaurant in Peking. The egg rolls were good though.
