It's marketing. Tell people they need something and they will buy it.
I remember my grandmother and great aunt (born in the '20s) talk about the beginning of regular deodorant. They talked about how that was just how people smelled. Wasn't necessarily bad. Now we can't imagine life without it.

When I was in Iraq, a lot of people seemed to have no idea what deodorant was or the concept of taking a shower.
