We need to choose which option for my daughter before she starts at A&M. The fixed rate is currently higher than the variable. What is the consensus for the best option to select?

I'd like to hear some opinions on this as well.

I am leaning variable. If you pick fixed you pay a higher rate, your basically gambling that the rate will go up enough to offset the years you pay higher than actual. I don't think tuition has historically increased that much over a 4 year period.

To hell with Google, my encyclopedia did not have an answer - we have Texags for this stuff! Thanks for the chart.

Seems like a good question to ask your daughter.

I had no idea there was now a variable rate tuition option

I always assumed it has always been variable and has simply increased every year. We were lucky and did a pre-paid Texas Tomorrow fund for our son so he was locked in at whatever it was back around 2002. The fixed rate option is something I was unaware of.

As an out of state student from the 80's, I feel that $1400/year including an all sports pass was a fine deal.

I was an in state student in the early 90s. I seem to recall that tuition went from $16 to $24 per semester hour while I was in school.

Yep. I remember that and was outraged! lol. I went on to graduate school during that time and the department head also made graduate students register for 12 hours instead of 9 hours to be considered full time. As I had a research assistantship, you were able to move from out-of-state to in-state tuition. So, all graduate students complained about that extra $120 or so a semester.

When I started in 87, I remember there being a minor fuss because the hourly had just gone up from $6 to $8.

Books were WAAAAAAAY more than the actual tuition

Are you asking about the interest rate on the loans or the cost? Some answers seem to be addressing the cost, which of course would not go down. But if you're asking about the interest rate being fixed or variable, that's very interesting with how volatile the interest rates are and will be over the next year or so.
