Are Garage Sales Still a Thing Anymore?

I remember 20 years ago when there would be many more garage sales in summer. People put their junk outside, sipped a beer and sat in the sun all day.

No one does it anymore, I just see maybe 1-2 in my area each summer.

I myself have never had any, I just put it on Facebook Marketplace and people ask, negotiate and I am able to get rid of my junk.

people aren't as honest as they used to be = more theft. need too many friends/family to help out that it aint worth it

We held one about 20 years ago. And then said "never again".

The money isn't worth the prep and the dealings with garage sale shoppers.

Not really. Everyone who wants a garage already has one.

Usually the 3rd weekend in April all the neighborhoods in our area of San Antonio, have garage sales because some subdivisions have gates to keep the garage sale riffraff out and it makes it had to have a garage sale when they are not allowed in. I have only participated twice. First time I made about $800 second time about $500. Another reason to have a subdivision garage sale is that you only have to get one garage sale permit which I think is $15 to $30. I want to have on this year because we haven't had one since we had kids. I haven't heard any plans for one but the 3rd weekend in April is the spring game and I want to go this year. Our subdivision also has like a trade days in May at the park which is more like a garage sale than a craft fair but you have to haul all your crap up there. I have never sold anything there, but I have seen some good stuff for sale for cheap prices. Like nice bikes for $50, $1000 golf clubs for $100. An old coin operated pool table for $200.

I'm not sure. Call it an estate sale maybe.

Mexicans become Jewish during either one.

Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, etc. No need anymore.

Craigslist is so 00's. I used to be the craiglist king. I even wrote a business school paper for my negotiation class on craigslist negotiation. But 15 years later when I got back to using it, no takers. It's old news.
It's all FB Marketplace now.

We did one about a year ago because we told the kids they could have some $ if we could get rid of a bunch of kid stuff. My wife sold more on Facebook marketplace during the garage sale than we sold to walk ups. Several of those people who came to pick up bought more stuff. Made like $400.

Pretty rare that we have stuff that we want to get rid of where the hassle of selling it is worth the money we'd get for it.

So most of the time we set stuff out for bulk trash and people will come grab it off the curb before it gets picked up.

But I think next weekend we're doing one with our neighbors. She's advertising it on Facebook and we have some decent furniture we're looking to get rid of. It all adds up to probably over $1000 so worth hanging out in the driveway for a few hours.

Big part of what makes this work is we're getting a truck scheduled to come take away whatever is left early afternoon.

my former neighbor had one 5 years ago before she moved. it was in the middle of august in texas and some old dude came wearing a trenchcoat. he was going through cabinets and stuff that wasnt for sale. she told me everytime her or someone working would approach him, it smelled like straight ass. said he had some kind of fart machine to clear the room.

I find OfferUp to work very well for me.

My peeve with Offerup is it is mobile only. Cannot use the desktop to upload or type in ads. I tried it for some time and then give up. I didnt' have much success with it thought it could be because I didn't use it a whole lot.

In the last suburban neighborhood I lived in a few years ago, they were very much a thing. Also a thing to then leave your directional signs up at every corner after the sale was over and then find them in your driveway a week later. Also a thing to have your wife tell you that probably there are new owners there, not the offenders of the week before, and that the husband might get shot.

The neighborhoods in our area do two a year. I always say "we'll do it next time to clear out this garage," but then it comes around and we're usually busy or else it just seems like a lot of effort. I've just started giving stuff away on my neighborhood facebook group.

We have a spring and fall sale every year. The only time our POA will allow it. We accumulate too much crap, so I partake each time. Typically make $300 - $500 each time. I do the prep and the sale, as I like the haggling and the challenge to get rid of junk that we really want gone, but not sure if anyone would want it. We got a panini maker as a wedding gift in 2011. I sold it 2 years ago. I refused to give it away or let it go for a few bucks. Most satisfying $12 I've ever made.

The most challenging part is the haggling with Mexicans. They want everything for a quarter. I have no problem telling them that a $5 jacket isn't going to be reduced by 95% and give a straight up "no".
Hogs suck, Horns suck, everyone else I can deal with.

How does OfferUp make money? There is no fee for selling on that platform, correct?

this and varage sale.

The last community garage sale we had was maybe 2019 or so, and with the terrible turnout, news of varage sale spread around.. It's still really only good for stuff of value or kid stuff (bikes, playsets, etc), I find that not even the people that live within a few miles of me want my crap either.

so FB marketplace is great for that since I can reach all classes of people around the entire metro, and those people are willing to drive 25 miles across town for cheap junk.

I sell stuff on FB marketplace almost monthly.
Right now all my homebrew stuff is on there.. little by little it will be gone.

My wife has been really successful selling stuff on FB marketplace as well. We tried the neighborhood garage sale last year and it wasn't worth the effort. We did figure out relatively quickly that if you want to get rid of just about anything to put it on there and sell it for cheap. If you put it on there for free people are much less likely to pick things up. But that same item being sold for $5 will get picked up every time.

Also important to make sure the posting indicates that we will not help you load or transport said items. People will show up in vehicles too small for furniture to the point that it's comical and we post measurements on anything that is at risk of not fitting in a standard sized vehicle.

I really enjoy going to garage and estate sales. Sometimes you find some really cool stuff.

I generally sell portable stuff, though once I sold a dishwasher in bad shape. I go to a nearby restaurant and wait outside and that is where I meet the buyer. Not at home unless the item is too big or heavy. Even then it is in the garage or driveway and the doors locked.

We had annual bulk trash pickup last weekend. I put two TV's, two vacuums, and a broken hedge trimmer on the curb at about 9:00 AM. They were all picked up by scavengers by 11:30.

Don't some socialist cities require a permit to have a garage sale?

That probably discourages it from happening?

I pay to sell my own stuff?

San Antonio has had a permit requirement since the 1980s or so. And you can't get a permit more often than once every three months. The reason being that some folks were essentially running flea markets out of their homes.

That isn't really socialism. It is more about zoning.

I live in a retirement community. Every fall the community has a yard sale, with all proceeds going to scholarships for the local high school. Items are collected for the sale beginning in February. When residents die or move into assisted living, their families usually don't want to deal with getting rid of all their crap, so we volunteer to take take it and put in storage for the yard sale. All the houses here have two car garages, but a lot of the people here either don't drive or have just one car. That leaves a lot of empty garages to store yard sale crap. In October, it is all moved to the clubhouse and set up for sale in two large ballrooms and a gym. Yard sale starts at 8:00 a.m.. People usually start getting in line at sunrise. Over 100 volunteers run the sale. The doors close at 1:00 P.M. When people first enter the sale they are given the opportunity to buy a "golden ticket" for $5. A golden ticket allows entry back into the yard sale at 1:15, with permission to take anything you carry out, free of charge. By 2:30, everything is gone. Volunteer students from the high school help to dismantle display tables and reset the ballrooms with original furniture. By 3:30, it's pizza and beer/soft drinks time for all the volunteers and the place is cleaner than when we started.

Last year, we were able to give over $40,000 in scholarships to the high school.

It's hard to have a garage sale when you're a committed minimalist. "I'll have a garage sale. How long will it take to sell a used book, the tumbler from last week's convention, and the coffee cup the vender dropped off this morning?"
