How long do you want to ignore this user?
My son basically had his bags packed for Auburn next year, having been accepted into their business school months ago. This past Friday he received full admission into the school of architecture at the College Station campus.

He's up against a huge decision... he and I will be headed up to Aggieland on Tuesday of this next week to tour, etc, and I want to take him somewhere afterward that might "help the decision". What would be the best Tuesday night hangout for prospective seniors in high school? I'd be down for a few hours at the Chicken, but not sure that's the best bang for the buck. Thanks for any advice.

You had 18 years to make the sale and are letting it hinge on a trip to a bar that smells like pee?

Bang for your buck?

Business at one Architecture at another? Those are quite different and should be the ultimate choice.

What's he going to study in architecture?
I would get him connected to students that are studying the same thing. Then, go to the Rec Center(s).

He should be city planner, why be an architect when you can design whole city

Yeah, don't let the location drive the decision. Choose based on what he think he wants to do for a career.

Auburn's a good choice. And of course so is A&M.

Nothing is higher than architect.

Does your son like sports? Try to get a tour of bright and Kyle. Go to the ag baseball game.

If not, go sightseeing of coeds around south side

If that's not his bag, tell him you'll give him more spending money for A&M over Auburn and wonder to yourself why your kid doesn't like sports or women

Prospective students step foot on campus and they either get it or they don't. No parent sponsored night on the town is going to change that.

What kind of business degree would he want to get at Auburn? I agree that the choice of major and career is a lot more important than which big university he wants to go to.

Where are you coming from? Have you taken him to CS a lot? If so he already has an idea. If not he's wondering why not and why now. Let him decide.

Spend the night with the Corps

Surely you took him to a home game and saw the Aggie Band plus all the young coeds in their Daisy Dukes and Cowboy boots.

He's not going to like it, but go to juco for two years and save the $. College is a bit of a scam for both those majors.

Can't really do the juco for 2 years for architecture. A lot of the hours are studio based and you have 8 studios (1 a semester) that can't be taken simultaneously. Just take core classes in the summers at blink or wherever to save some money.

Business vs arch is a huge difference. I was undergrad environmental design then masters of arch while 2 of my 3 roommates were PPA and one finance. Not a lot of overlap in those skillsets and education

Also don't let people scare him off from architecture because of long hours and low pay. It's all what you put in to it. My wife and I are both architects and had both made partner at separate firms within about 10 years and do more than ok for ourselves.

But to the main question if he likes baseball that would be one idea. Good atmosphere, unique Aggie experience with some non football traditions and college Aggie girls for him to stare at.

Baseball game, tour of the rec center(s), tour of Langford, look at some dorms, walk around campus. If he has a friend or sibling that can tag along, let them wander and check things out without you for a bit. Gives him some freedom without being tethered to a parent. If he's like my son, I imagine he's going to have a pretty quick opinion whether College Station is the right fit. Big campus, lots of people...but I think it comes down to the major. Maybe an arch degree with some business classes. Or roll right into an MBA program?

Lord knows those of us in the design world need better business acumen every once in a while!

This. What does he really want to do? A&M and Auburn are both great schools, and both have hot women.

Take him to see the Construction Sciences department. Better money, and you get to critique architects and engineers all day long while lording over subcontractors.

Isn't an architect just an art school drop-out with a tilty desk, and a big ruler?

So where is the nearest strip club to campus?

What's the cost difference, after scholarships?

If one is much cheaper, go there. He can always change majors. Worst case - if has trouble getting in Mays later - econ is easier to get in and still good.

I was an agribusiness major. Most of my courses were economics based or related. I think Econ would've been a more marketable and recognizable degree.

Auburn is a great school for architecture. And so is A&M.

If he winds up at Auburn he should look into Rural Studio.

Architecture school at A&M is pretty selective so good on him for getting accepted.

If he wants to work in Texas he should go to Texas A&M because of the connections he'll make.
