I need to get new gloves for both boys this year.

1 is 4 years old and way too small and the other had all the leather strings broke. Both gloves were not expensive either and probably why they didn't last.

Not wanting to break the bank, but what size do they need and what are good brands that are easy to break in.

Oldest is doing 14U and youngest is doing 10U.

New Nokonas are expensive, but open to used ones.

This is an area where you really don't want to go cheap. One day when Colton is starting that first semester at some rural JUCO with a scholarship in hand after years of travel ball, thousands in equipment, and all of your free time gone you won't look back and worry about he cost of this glove.

If you want the glove to last buy premium (expensive). I can't comment on exactly what size your kids need, but the 14U may be in a position to buy a glove he will use the rest of his baseball career. Spend money on that glove.

The 10U will most likely need to size up again. Spend less money on that glove.

The leather strings shouldn't have broken unless a rat was chewing on it. Rats love the leather strings. keep the next one in a plastic box with a lid.

Little league gloves can't be more than 14" long. 12-12.5" should be good for everything except catcher until he gets to HS.

Buy the cheapest Wilson or Rawlings Academy has, and then search youtube for how to break it in.

I will go this route. Last glove was from Walmart. Will definitely keep them in a container after the season. I believe these were in and out of the vehicle during summer.

For the 14U what is his primary postition. If he is an infielder then you want a about 11.5" outfielder 11.75"-12". Also depends on the kids hand if he is a bigger kid then the bigger glove etc...

on the 10U whatever is most comfortable.

For little league, I like the Wilson A-series. The A2000 is at the top, but they have versions down to A1000, A700, A500, etc. I would recommend whichever of those models fits them and your budget best.

My son is in his last season of 8U and uses an 11.5" A500.

I agree 100% on this I bought mine a premium glove when he was 14 and he still uses it now as a Sophmore in HS. It will probably last him at least through his Senior year.

The leather strings broke on my high school glove from wal mart (1984) when I played intramurals in college. I just went and bought some work boot laces and re-laced the glove.

Laces still intact. Also helps if you oil the glove every 5 years or so.

It probably ends at 18. My parents bought me a high end catchers mitt when I was 15. I still use it today. That was 1997.

I would by your 10U son a 11.5 to 12 inch USED glove. Used baseball gloves are the best. Most kids at 10U won't spend the time it takes to break in a glove.

Agree...your 14U could use a premium glove now. The "better" the glove; the harder it is to break in.

Check out http://www.usasportsdirect.com/
They are a distributor for Glovesmith Gloves. Very high quality gloves. They offer value level gloves for 100-150$ all the way to full custom if you want to spend the money.
I bought one for my son (also 14U) and you can tell the leather is high quality and built to last.

My Wilson A2000 lasted me forever, in fact it is still in great condition almost 40 years after it was purchased. Great glove. Just keep them conditioned and obviously away from rodents.

Loved my a2000. Sucks someone slid into it and the dial is broken but lasts forever. Mizuno and SSK are hard to beat as well

Found a Wilson A500 in a bargain bin at Academy for $25. Hope it works for the younger one. The older one I got the A700.

Now to break them in before LL season starts.

those glove are already broke in. the leather isnt stiff enough to need much.

My kids will likely not play ball past 12u, but when they turn 12 i am going to buy them a Nokona, A2000, or HOH infielder glove. I want them to keep it the rest of their lives...when they play catch with a buddy in college or have kids and teach them. Buying a cheap love will result in the garbage can.

Bradley makes some nice gloves, not Wilson A2000 or Nokona, but very nice and way less than half the cost of a premium glove.

Go to play it again sports and get a used glove. It's already broken in. And in a few seasons you'll need a new one anyway.

I'm just glad that the first post responsive to this thread nailed the travel ball/juco scholarship/scrabble kid name/obsessive parent joke right off the bat. Well done.

Take both gloves to Dicks' and they will break them in professionally for like $20. Can be ready in a couple of days.

I think the A500 has its place, but more along the lines of T-ball and coach pitch. I'd give the A700 to the 10-year old. My son is 9 and plays with that glove. I've been impressed with its construction and durability despite being relatively easy to break in for a younger player.

I'd be concerned the finger stalls aren't big enough for a 14-yr old. For something that won't totally break the bank I'd recommend a Rawlings R9 or GG Elite (I think these are only at Dick's). For slightly more you might find a clearance A2000 or Heart of the Hide for around $200.

Don't take it to Dick's to get steamed. The 16-yr old that's never touched a baseball isn't who you want breaking it in. All these gloves mentioned (A500, A700, R9, GG) are pretty easy to break in. Just pound the hinges and heel good with a mallet and play catch. Maybe a hot water treatment if you want to speed up the process but do it yourself so it fits your son's hands. If you did end up with an A2000 or HoH, those would definitely take some work to break in.
