A California judge sentenced a woman convicted of stabbing a man more than 100 times in a cannabis-induced psychotic fit to just two years probation and no prison time on Tuesday.

A jury in Southern California's Ventura County, found Bryn Spejcher guilty in December of involuntary manslaughter in the killing of 26-year-old Chad O'Melia.

The sentence drew sobs of relief from Spejcher and her loved ones while family members of O'Melia exclaimed in shock and anger.

Ventura County Superior Court Judge David Worley said his decision was based on the lack of culpability, asserting the "senseless" killing early the morning of May 28, 2018, was propelled by the psychotic episode that experts for the prosecution and defense attributed to the bong hits of marijuana Spejcher and O'Melia smoked.

"From that point forward, she had no control over her actions," Worley said before announcing probation and a suspended prison sentence of four years.
This is complete bullsh**. They successfully used "Reefer Madness" as a defense. Here is the only piece of rational thinking in the article.

Moments after the verdict, the victim's father, Sean O'Melia, accused Worley of bias and said the ruling set a dangerous precedent.

"He just gave everyone in the state of California who smokes marijuana a license to kill someone," he said.

...and expect the California exodus to accelerate. This is madness (not the good kind either lol).

Her lawyers said during the trial that she was "involuntarily intoxicated," and claimed Chad O'Melia had pressured and intimidated her into taking the last bong hit. Under California criminal law, people are responsible for their actions when impaired by alcohol or drugs unless their intoxication was involuntary.

This is total BS. Not the fact that you aren't responsible if intoxication wasn't voluntary (say someone put drugs in your coffee)
But the fact they say her situation was involuntary because she was pressured into taking the "LAST" bong hit.

Umm excuse me, she voluntarily took the FIRST BONG HIT! So she's responsible. It's not the last dose of alcohol/drug that makes you do stupid ****, it's the first dose which impairs your judgement and leads to more doses, which leads to you doing stupid *****

Also, ripping bong hits does nothing to make one violent. "One too many" results in coughing, squinting, cotton mouth, maybe even getting dizzy. But not psychotic fits.

Alcohol and weed should both be legal, but you should also go to jail if you're under the influence of one and kill someone. How is this even a question?

Read my quote above.. involuntary intoxication was the defense.

Which I agree should exist; you should not be held accountable for your actions if you prove someone slipped LSD in your coffee or whatever, but I do not think this girl was involuntarily intoxicated.

Assuming the quote is accurate, defense said she was pressured into taking the LAST bong hit.
Not the first, or the second, or however many they did before the last.

Hot girl privilege. And even being a young and kinda decent looking female is an advantage in front of a jury.

Testimony showed that under the influence of the psychotic episode, she stabbed Chad O'Melia more than 100 times with different knives, also stabbing herself.

When law enforcement arrived shortly after midnight, Chad O'Melia was covered in a pool of blood. Bryn Spejcher was screaming hysterically and holding a knife she plunged into her neck. Law enforcement officers used a Taser and several baton blows to disarm her and then called for paramedics in actions her family said saved her life.

I mean.... that .. um.. is a bad trip.
It couldn't have been just weed or she is undiagnosed with somethin.

Many murders are committed by people high on drugs and/or just not in their right mind, otherwise they wouldn't kill people. It doesn't mean you get a pass for doing it unless you are in California, i guess

That absolutely sounds like a bad trip with something laced into what was smoked.

That said, I think this judge just set the precedent for California's version of the gay panic defense.

yeah, my only research into this case was just reading the article, but it seems like the tox screen would have shown if they got something laced in there.. I dunno. That sounds horrifying for everyone involved including her.

My guess is that something was in that weed, PCP ?
Pot can also bring psychosis if someone is predisposed but not often.
She's at the age where schizophrenia often occurs for women, and if she was in a prodromal state CHC could trigger psychosis, but not likely.

A person doesn't have to be on drugs to freak out and become violent. Also, I don't have to write a test to tell you that I take drugs.

Seems the experts disagree

Some of the country's top forensic psychiatrists concluded that this experience was '100 percent' consistent with previous accounts of cannabis-induced psychosis.

'We know, pretty conclusively, that marijuana can lead to psychiatric illness,' Dr Timothy Fong, faculty leadership of the Cannabis Research Initiative at University of California, Los Angeles and clinical psychiatrist, told DailyMail.com.
