We had a dinner invitation last night and another family was also invited. We have known them for about 22 ears and the husband is always a show-off. He is either boasting about his career or his undergrad school (top ranked) or his wealth or his kids. His wife is no less.

So yesterday my wife told me to prepare to listen to them talk about their Belize cruise. And when we met, I noticed him looking for an entry point to insert that into the conversation. Once he got it, he talked for 20-25 minutes about how much fun they had, what all they did, what they ate and drank etc etc. After 3 minutes I got bored but he would not take the hint. Yammered on and on.

Don't people get it? No one cares about your vacation. Just mention it for a minute and then move on to common topics.

You just jealous because you're a broke ass who went to a crappy school and can't afford to go on nice vacations.

I can't imagine someone wealthy from a top school bragging about going on a cruise, especially a cruise to Belize. That's a pretty bottom of the barrel vacation. That's like saying you just got back from Cancun or Destin.

I just got back from Italy and Spain but don't talk about it to friends because I know no one cares.

He is reasonably wealthy and did go to top schools but the issue is the bragging about vacs. Why do some people do that? I feel bad to tell him to shut up too.

Of course he isn't - they're boring AF, go on and on bragging, … wait, you do on here what your friend did at dinner.

You should ask him how much it cost. And, no matter what he says, say "Wow! That sounds like a great deal. You must have really gone budget friendly!" No matter what he says, always have a way to top it or make backhand comments about it. Like, "Belize? I had a friend that went on a cruise there and their daughter got her hair braided in the port. She got lice from the hair braids and there was a lice breakout on the ship. I would never go on a cruise that went to a county like that. It sounds gross."

Well, you may think it is bragging but I only tell you the truth when you make false judgements. This is the internet, you don't know the backgrounds of people posting. So the person you think is a lolpoor may be a multi-millionaire. Don't believe everything read. I have done well in some areas in life and have not done well in some areas of life. Why do you call it bragging when I discuss both?

Anyway, the topic is about people who go to vacations seemingly to talk about it and to post on insta and other placed. Just enjoy your vac, are these people trying to make others feel bad or something?

Actually he did mention that someone offered to braid hair of everyone in the family (he is bald though). I have not been to Belize so I just said "cool... nice..."

It depends upon the audience and where the vacation was. Most of my family has never really been anywhere, I don't think my brother has ever left the country so they always ask for pics.

When I got back from the Galapagos a while back, a lot of coworkers were curious since that is a place most had only heard of on Natuonal Geographic on PBS. It ended being a "lunch and learn" and about 60 of the 80 people in the office turned up to hear about it. I will wager that at least half were there for the free lunch though.

I know what you're talking about OP. Keep vacation talk short and sweet. That type of convo is really one sided and it's more courteous to get back to conversation that allows for input from both people.

We've traveled the world and lived abroad several places and times. I always avoid any conversations on trips as most people feel their trip was the "perfect" trip and that anyone who went (or will go) where they did had to have done everything they did all the way down to what restaurant and what they ordered - and if they didn't the other person's trip was a disaster. It's amazing the competition people put into their travels.

The absolute worst time was a couple that brought their photos over (beginning of digital photos) and put the CD in our computer and made us look at over 250 photos over an hour of a place we had lived before!!

When you get trapped in a conversation with a financial / life bragger, explain to them that you've found people with the most money never talk about it and people who over-share about their wealth and success sometimes don't understand finances and net worth. Ask to have a look at their bank statements, mortgage statements, tax returns, and paid off car titles to test your theory which is "most likely wrong" (self-depreciating to disarm the loudmouth).

In all seriousness, most of these people are insecure souls who are full of caca.

This echoes my sentiment on people at work bragging about the Vax during 2021-2022.

I felt bad for them and wanted them to shut up.

I've traveled a lot so I enjoy the stories.

However, the two groups I can't stand are cruisers and Disney people.

And if they went on a Disney cruise, I'm excusing myself to go get another drink.

I suppose Belize is nice.

I sent my maid on a cruise there. She seemed to enjoy it.

Not as much as we enjoyed our 2 month vacation in Fiji in our overwater cabin, but, probably a lot.

I would rather hear vacation stories than "hey I brought my guitar with me, I'll play some songs"

this. Sometimes we go on "easy" trips where my kids can enjoy themselves/play and wife and I can have drinks and relax. I don't think I've ever spent more than 2 minutes talking about those types of trips because everyone's done it and they know the experience.

But more exotic stuff like travels across the atacama desert and the Silk Road piques peoples' interest and I'll give more detail.

All of that to say that you just need to read the damn room a little better when talking about travel.

The problem may not be with the travel story. The problem may with the story teller. Some people can go to Disney for a week with five year olds and tell the story so well that its better than watching Lord of the Rings.

Other people can hike across the desert to undiscovered pyramids, find treasure, and rescue a princess, but they're such horrible storytellers that you'd rather stick your fingers in a socket just for an excuse to leave.
