In reference to the *2024 Goals / Resolutions and Progress Thread*, I want to learn Spanish this year. What's the best program out there to actually learn Spanish? And when I say learn Spanish, I mean actually be able to hold conversations in Spanish beyond, "How much is this?" Or "Where is the bathroom".

I tried duolingo a long time ago but didn't think it was that effective. So what's the best program out there?

An in person class (maybe at a local college)

If you don't have a consistent schedule you could do Baselang or maybe Preply, live tutors/people to talk with.

Immersion.

I took Mandarin classes for a year but didn't learn to speak conversationally until I moved to China.

Take your niece with you to Mexico City.
Get an apartment or extended-stay hotel.
Immerse yourself around the Mexican people.
Pack some Pepto and Immodium

Virtual lessons with a real person from Mexico is how my wife is learning

I've been using Duolingo, and I like it, but how much you learn depends on how much time you invest. It gives daily reminders to do some lessons and has a "leader board" to appeal to any competitive nature one might possess.

I don't know how it compares to other programs

Home Depot and Lowe's parking lots at 6 am on a weekday.

I sent my oldest to Puerto Rico for the summer and she attended a language school called ISLA.

They do as much or as few classes as you want.

Pimsleur's methodology has always made the most sense to me, but you only learn conversational skills. It won't really help you read or write the language.

This post inspired me to complete my 1092 day of using Duolingo.

Date a Mexican, Puerto Rican or other Central American chick. Tolerate abuse for a few months then end it.

Thats a good way to get knifed, too!

By far the most expensive and risky option.

Be born in Spain.

Texas was never part of Great Britain, Thank God.

My wife has been doing dulingo for over 2 years she has become fluent but she took Spanish in college. She did it so that she can talk to our maid. You have to do it everyday for at least 15 minutes and it is annoying as hell to your husband how has to listen to it.

As for me, I have no reason or want to better myself.

They have to be replaced every three years. They go from cute and little to having to lie down on the bed to pull on their jeans in the blink of an eye.

As to the OP's question, the cheapest and easiest solution is to add "ee" to the end of most of your words. Like "get your lunchee and get in the truckee."

Work at a restaurant.

Just not in San Juan. They speak better English at the HD in San Juan, excellent , than they do in north Miami, as in none, in North Miami.
