My son is in college and my daughter is 3 years from college. Empty nesting is approaching.
How did you all handle it? Did you guys get all romantic with the wife/husband when the kids left? Or did you realize that you did not recognize the person you live with anymore?

Thoughts? Experiences? Advice?

Love the empty nesting. The wife had issues at first. Its kind of like when we were first married.

I have a Kindergartener and I am 44. We will be empty nesters in 2036 and I will be 57.

I'm 51 with a 9th grader, but he loves it here. He has a monster gaming PC setup downstairs, and Dad is usually upstairs. I have a hunch he'll want to go to MU and live at home.

I have a 40+ wife who will be about 50 when this happens. This seems gross to me.

Had a kindergartener when I was 52. You're in for a great time.

We brought back no pants Friday's!

Actually sex hasn't gotten more frequent but more random bc there is no one else in the house! Evenings and weekends that were filled with kid's events don't exist and we do spend a lot more time together which we both like. Also, we can take vacation whenever bc no school to worry about.

It's coming for me soon. You'll know it when it happens, because my posts will increase 100x. Also, since I skipped a mid-life crisis, I plan on going "don't give a ****" crazy for a few years when it happens.

Had our first when we were still at A&M. We thought, "Great, we'll be empty nesters before we're 40"

34 years later and we've had 6 move out and 4 still at home. Our youngest is 9.

We may be empty nesters by the time we're 70.

Do you not use contraceptives?
Or do you want so many kids?

I have 2 and one is in college and one in HS and I am tired. I was just coaching my daughter (HS) in Computer Science - Java Programming. Yesterday I was helping her with Trigonometry with sector lengths. I am an engineer so I like this sort of stuff.

I did it for my son also when he was in HS (not as much though). But I have no energy to do it again if I had a 3rd.

infinity just in intellectual pursuits (at least I try).
Not in burdening the world with over-producing babies.

My 2 are the best and but I cannot take any more. Next would be cats/dogs and then grandkids.

We started late so we won't be empty nesting until I'm 63. It makes us sad to think about the kids being gone. Gonna have to try the "no pants Fridays" mentioned in an earlier post. That oughtta cheer us up.

To be truthful, I brought back no pants Friday, wife does not always buy in!

I do miss them though.

EDIT: I miss the kids that is!

A bit personal there, but yes, we do want this many children.

I am not "burdening" the world with my offspring; I am blessing it.

Throughout their lives, each of my children knows that they have 9 allies in life no matter what. They may get mad at each other and fight and bicker, but if it comes down to it, they would fight over who gets to donate a kidney if one of them needed one.

I love that you do that and feel that way. I have an aunt and uncle who had 12 kids. Always a party at their house.

I have no problem with good people making more good kids. The world needs good people who are raised with good values. Sounds like you're doing it.

I have no idea how anyone can afford 10 kids unless there is a large amount of money available through family money, found money (oil discovered on property, lottery, etc.), inheritance, trust fund, or a monster salary from the dad. The wife, pregnant for 7.5 years of her 20s - late 30s would have a hard time with a career that could cover the cost.

Also, is there any personal time? Do you ever get to read a book or watch a movie?

Sounds like an interesting life. Its hard for me to imagine what it would be like.

Finding quiet time to make more kids after the first four or five had to be a challenge.

Bet that minivan has seen some interesting times.

I have four kids and there is no personal time. Ten kids ... lol ... your personal time is your kids time until death.

No large amount of money; no trust fund, no oil (yet), no lottery, no inheritance and a salary that may be a little angry, but is no monster.

Wife has been a stay-at-home Mom the whole time.

Different expectations,different priorities.

We've never owned a new car.

Vacations always include an ice chest and sandwiches.

Children share rooms.

Supporting friends and famil to allow for date time.

Also, for 23 years we've had at least one teenager in the house who could babysit.

Right now, we have 3 teenagers in the house and only one child who would need to be "babysat".

Truth is, I'll miss them when they're out of the house in a few years.

My wife and I are now empty nesters as of this weekend. Just dropped our youngest off at Northwestern.

Wifey is still pretty emotional. Def more quiet in the house.

No matter what the age, the best advantage is being able to leave the lube on the nightstand and not worry about it.

How well do the kids all know each other? Is the oldest connected to the youngest? He/she has to have been 10-12 years older. 12 year old boys don't seem to be as fascinated with babies as everyone else. There are probably small groups of 2 or 3 who are closer with each other than their older or younger siblings.

The chances of total empty nesting with 10 kids seems small. Someone will always need a place to stay between semesters / jobs / houses / marriages etc.
