In Spanish botana means snack. At your typical Mexican restaurant a botana would be the equivalent of an appetizer sampler.
In the Rio Grande Valley however, Botanas are dishes that are a common feast. Think of a ginormous plate of nachos, covered in fajitas, with quesadillas on top. With a giant plate of Mexican rice and another of refried beans. And then a stack of tortillas and some rabbit door on the side.
They sell them by the person, but a 6 person Botana can easily feed 10. Every Sunday after church the family would gorge themselves on one. And then eat leftovers for supper. Everyone that I have ever taken back home has been blown away by them.
Anyways, have you ever had the pleasure?
