Talk about one profession that went from common to obscure to no one cares anymore. A bit odd though, seem like it would be an ok profession. You make your own hours, work with hands, and its an actual skill that can be useful if zombies take over.

They've all been replaced by Thais and Indians.

It is cheaper for me to fly to Bangkok, get a dozen bespoke suits, 20 shirts, and a few sports coats then it is to buy 2-3 suits in the US from a true tailor.

I can remember when I graduated from high school (waaaaaay back in 1990) going into Gus Mayer's at the mall in Beaumont to buy a suit. The man looked at me, and told me my measurements. He then confirmed it with the tape. Those guys knew their stuff. I've never been a big dresser, but buying menswear from them was always a nice experience. I can't imagine they're even open any more.

This. I have worked with several people that will make a trip over there every couple three years and just make it a business vacation. Get a huge volume of very well made business attire pieces while enjoying the place and still drastically undercut prices here for less volume. Hell, know a guy who met his wife that way.

Everyone is focusing on suit tailors. What about normal shirts and pants.

There is a guy from Thailand that comes to the US 1-2x/yr that a bunch of people on TexAgs use. He is a little pricier than being in Thailand, but still significantly cheaper that your US tailors.

I'm going to Thailand for a work conference in a couple of weeks and I'm going to my tailor to have him make me polos and t-shirts out of the same material they make Rhoback with.

Walk down any side soi in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok and see how many Indians ask you if you'd like a suit. There's no shortage of tailors.

Watchmaking is another dying profession. Those little micro tools they use fascinate me.

And it's been at least 20 years since I've had alterations done by anyone who wasn't an Asian woman. I think they've got it locked down at this point.

So long as you don't call what you're wearing an outfit.

My wife is a seamstress. She's technically a theatre teacher, but she makes almost all their costumes by hand and fits them to each person. She's made well over 1000 costumes from scratch over the past 25 years.

She does a lot of custom tailoring of both men's & women's clothes on the side as well. She also makes a lot of customized clothes for people, usually dresses for things like prom or quinceaneras, and also custom costumes for Halloween.

She'll probably do it full time when she's finally ready to retire from teaching. Between simple tailoring; making dresses for proms, quinceaneras, & weddings; and costumes for all the theatre teachers she has connections with throughout the state, she'll be as busy as she wants to be and make far money.

You must work in a profession where you don't need to dress nicely then. I have used several tailors over the years. They're still out there.

But yeah, I guess you're not walking down the street to the tailor after your stop at the blacksmith though are you.
CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

I work in the apparel industry and I used to know, actually still do a couple that are still living, guys that worked for Hart Schaffner Marx, Hickey-Freeman, Daroff and Sons and other large US manufacturers of upper end men's clothing. Obviously not tailored clothing, but in the same vein.

One, a very close friend of mine and I have spoken a few times about the change in American clothing, making it, and all the accompanying interesting things that have transpired. One of the things that spelt the death of both the semi-tailored and tailored clothing industry in the US, aside from cheaper labor and such, was that the American appetite for immediate gratification is all consuming. Few Americans will wait a few weeks or such for a suit or nice shirt to be made. Not when they can buy it off the shelf quickly.

For every lack of there being a tailor, there is a really big cottage industry of people that do alterations in the US, you may not see them but they are there. I know of one small shop that has 6 sewers going and usually has a 3-4 day wait for turnaround, unless the customer wants to pay a premium. The do real well.

I have actually thought about doing this full time, as I know how to sew and have access to all the varieties of industrial machines and can fix most of them myself. But I don't know if my patience would allow it. True tailors still exist in smatterings and they do pretty well.

In grade school we took some aptitude test and with the results the test make listed several careers that night the student might consider.

One kid in the back of the class raised his hand and asked, "what does a sanitation worker do?"

In most cities, they drive a truck and operate the arm.

Here in Columbia, we still have real garbage men (and women). No city roll-carts. The boomers that run the city think it's important that the jobs, with City benefits, remain in place. In the nearly ten years I've lived here, we've never not had a shortage of garbage men. Even with the benefits, no one wants to be a garbage man.

A timeline of roll carts in Columbia, MO (going back to 2011)

I had a friend who grew up poor, his whole life he wanted to be a garbage man because they got days off, made pretty good money, and had good benefits. He did it in college for the city of huntsville. To this day he will tell you its the best job he ever had.
