This is Professor Micah Green from Texas A&M. Here's the info for the 2023 Veritas Forum, coming up on Feb 26 on campus:

The Veritas Forum is an opportunity for the Aggie community to come together each year and explore life's hardest questions, connecting truth to our hardest questions and deepest beliefs.

Join us on Sunday, February 26th at 7pm in Rudder Theatre for: "Is Anything Worth Dying For? Inside the Minds of Martyrs."

Dr. Sean McDowell of Biola University and Dr. Matthew Vess of Texas A&M will dialogue on the topic of martyrdom, exploring the motivations of those who have willingly laid down their lives for a cause, with special attention to the martyrdom of Jesus's disciples. Dr. McDowell's research has focused on what history can tell us about the fate of the apostles. For Dr. Vess, his research focuses on the psychological processes associated with people's efforts to manage existential concerns, including meaning and mortality.

Tickets are free. Please register at tx.ag/VERITAS23

Interesting topic/idea...

  • On one hand: Reaching so far back into history to evaluate/interpret, the Disciples' (and everyone's') motivations are hard to interpret because of the distance of time. No?

  • On the other hand: Modern examples (terrorists, etc) are similarly hard to understand because of the lack of information (because they were imbalanced/influenced, died without providing info, etc)

No disrespect (probably my own lack of religious education, while trying to remain pious), I don't follow why religion is a "special focus" of the topic, because...whomever is willing to lay down their life for a cause may have reasons that are unrelated to or transcend religion (as crazy as those reasons may be when viewed/interpreted by others).

I wish I was local and could attend. Will there be a WebEx and/or Zoom?

Good on you folks to open the topic/discussion though. Discussions like these are good for Aggies & good for society in general, IMO.

ETA: Apologies Forum 12 folks, I saw it on 12 earlier, was up late tonight trying to monitor my local "ice event" and got carried away. I should have responded on Forum 15.

LOL, kind of funny that
  • Forum 15 is for Religion & Philosophy, and
  • Forum 16 is for Politics

Usually, I don't venture to either.
