Woman at work claiming it'll be below zero Friday morning.

"WTF forecast is for 12?"

"Well, the wind chill is below zero. What's the difference?"

Uh, the difference is reality?

First. how are you having conversations about the weather with coworkers before 7 am? In person at the water cooler or video call? I can't envision a circumstance where I would be doing either.

And B, I kind of agree with her. Anything below about 35 is what I consider "freezing my balls off" cold.

We work 10 hour days 4 days a week, so many of us start at 6 AM.

And no she's wrong.

Well you could make the argument that it's just a difference in how you measure - thermometer vs skin. The thermometer is more precise but the skin is more practical if you're trying to figure out what to wear or if you plan to spend any time outside.

Or I can just say I don't know how wind chill is calculated. Either way, seems like a weird thing to get upset enough about to post about it.

We're (Central Missouri) supposed to have winds gusting to 50 mph Thursday/Friday with temperatures of -5F to -10F that night and afternoon temps around 10F both days.

A modest 2"-4" of snow could produce whiteout conditions. I feel like I'm living in the Dakotas!

What is she wrong about?

Is it not more appropriate to wear warmer/thicker clothing if a wind chill is 20-30 degrees below the actual temp?

-15 with 45mph winds can result in frostbite in 5 minutes. Take away all the wind, and it would take 30 minutes.

Are you saying this something a person should not consider if going outside?

Not a fan of cold breakfast burritos. I try to eat them fast before that happens. Helps to keep them out of the wind.

As someone who grew up in the Midwest, you pay attention to the wind chill and not the temperature.

Except for all practical purposes... that's exactly how it's calculated.

Quote:

Wind chill temperature is a measure of the combined cooling effect of wind and temperature. As wind increases, heat is carried away from the body at a faster rate, driving down both the skin temperature (which can cause frostbite) and eventually the internal body temperature (which can kill).

To be fair, all of us in Texas just assume that is your weather every day in the winter in Yankee land.

I currently reside in Northa Dakota, and yes, it's -47 wind chill right now...-20 temp with 19 mph winds

It's common to get snow here. We don't keep snow cover in the winter, but we do average around 20" a year.

It's the 50mph winds that are so weird. We aren't on the open plains. This is a pretty heavily forested area.

I got my degree in METR and love winter weather. Just hoping I wind up with enough snow somewhere in the back yard that we can get some sledding in before it melts.

If it's 33 and the wind is blowing hard enough to have wind chill in the teens water will never freeze. It will just reach 33 degrees faster.

KC Forecast for Saturday's Seahawks@Chiefs game. Not much of an NFL fan, but I love cold weather football.

Partly cloudy. Cold. Lows 5 below to zero. Highs around 10 above. Wind chill values as low as 20 below.

And if water is 211 F, it'll never boil but it'll still be hot as hell to the touch.

What's your point?
