Aren't they the same thing? Throw some brown sugar and marshmallows on them and call it good. Nobody can tell them apart, if they are even different.

Yams and Purple Potatoes are more like a russet in texture and not as sweet. They are objectively better than sweet potatoes

While I was at the store buying beer on Monday, the wife texted and asked me to pick up 6 yams. I walked up and down the aisle and all I could find was several items of various Sweet Potatoes but no Yams. I gave up and bought 6 of the sweet potatoes.

Came home, put 'em on the kitchen counter, and the the wife said, "Thank you".
So, no difference (at least at my house)!!!

Yams are starchier. They have a bark and look more like ginger. They are hard to find.

Most American recipes calling for yams are really referring to sweet potatoes.
