Do you know anybody that has gotten back to normal afterwards, or does it generally just stop/slow down degeneration? Our good friend and neighbor is having major neck surgery in the next few days, and we certainly are sending her our prayers. She is in great pain with degeneration of 2 vertebrae and loss of fluid due to bone growths from previous injuries.

My neighbor sounds similar. Good dude. Not sure about the surgery recovery. Haven't seen him in years. His wife and kids kicked him out of the house on account of the post surgery opioid addiction. Probably dead by now.

Depends on surgery. I had a microdiscectomy at l5-s1 a dozen years ago and am fine. You can't just say "neck surgery." Totally depends on what's being done and the underlying causes.

I was just chatting with a vendor of mine about my lower back problems recently; he had cervical spine issues, and had surgery about 10 years ago he said. He said it was the best decision ever.

I had a spinal fusion 2 decades ago after falling off a roof. The surgeon was great and I was back on light work assignments 3 months later. Degenerative disc issues are another matter, however, because you don't know the downstream effects and complications.

Update:

She's scheduled for Monday in Katy. Will have to go in from back and front. Will remove disc 3&4. cut away to let spinal fluid flow thru. Will have a steel plate and fuse together.

That doesn't sound good.

I have this problem. C-2 thru C-7. Diagnosed 15 years ago and I'm sure it's gotten worse. Surgeon and Pain doc both told me most people have it fused within 10 years…but most regret it. Said it continues to get worse and often they go in to fuse more. I was on pain meds for a few years and really clouded my mind. I got off those and have just been living with the pain. Bone on bone…pinched nerves. It sucks. I'm not sure what the future holds for me. They've developed artificial disks, but the surgery scares the beejesus out of me. Such a sensitive area. I don't want to wake up paralyzed.

I got 2 Mobi-C artificial disks from C5-C7 and it was the best thing I ever did. Had suffered from decades of neck pain and had tried physical therapy, steroid injections, etc. The stenosis was bad and was on the verge of pushing the nerves to the point they weren't going to fire anymore. Had my surgery in Jan 2020. Recovery wasn't too painful. Best thing ever. I used to have pain on my mind all the time. I couldn't feel parts of my hands/arms. Now I'm in great shape and forget I ever did it.

A buddy of mine called me up the other day and said he was going to change his legal name to "Spinal Cord"

I told him I was busy, and I'd have to call him back

I had C6-C7 fused using a cadaver bone in 2013. My symptoms, experience and recovery are nearly identical to this post. I tried PT, injections, etc MANY times prior to surgery, but they had no impact at all. I was hesitant at first because I was only 35 at the time, but I had been suffering through symptoms for a decade at that point and things were only getting worse.

9 years later, I continue to do the post op PT once or twice a week (mostly stretching) or I get a stiff neck, but every symptom I had prior to surgery is gone and hasn't returned in any way. I'm glad I had the procedure done.

Where did you get this done? Who was your surgeon? You may have convinced me to get it done.

Wife did about ten years ago at age of 46. Instant relief of all pain. Fantastic decision! She's ridden horses almost every day since about three months after the surgery.

There's a great doctor for this, who used to be in Dallas, named Christopher Duntsch. I'd google him...

I went to the second best neuro in Texas back in 1996 and had to have the surgery repeated again in 2003.

The second time I went with an ortho and no problems since. The ortho was the orthopedic surgeon for the Houston Ballet and I figured if he could fix their hammer toes, he could fix anything.
