Why do corporations feel they need to organize virtual team-building events?

I don't give a sheet about having "fun" with my coworkers.
I just work with them for some hours and want to shut my computer and play with my kids and do other things. I don't want to go to a mandatory event at work, that too online. Or even meet anyone in person.

Some people do, but many don't. Why not respect that? Work is just to earn a living for me. No other attachment. Corps should stop worrying about this as long as crap gets done on time. Don't fix what ain't broke.

Because your manager has some performance objective related to it, so he/she is doing it to check a box to ensure the bonus criteria is met. Probably has to do one per quarter but doesn't really want to see any of y'all outside of work, so now is going to squeeze in 4 "virtual events" between now and December.

Maybe. The question is why does he had a performance objective related to it? Corps should focus on performance.

You not wanting to have fun with your co-workers is a micro-agression towards them. You need to be more inclusive towards those with whom you work.

Middle management has to do something to justify its existence.

I always love the people who buy in and get real serious about it. Makes me laugh. Those people would have made excellent Branch Davidians.

I'd be interested to know how corporate team building has evolved over time.

I admit I'm envious when I see people doing trips with their companies.

In my almost 20 year career, the team building was:

- nice restaurant sit down dinner
- cock tails and appetizers at nice place
- happy hours
- bowling
- nothing for the the last 5 years I was with the company
- happy hours with new company once in the past year

That's pretty much it besides holiday parties.

Could be worse. Could be in person team building. Thank God for Covid cases rising and cancelling our mandatory fun trip to the Orlando office.

Counterpoint: free booze and food and a chance to hang out with people in a different context than work as usual. Will add that some of my previous jobs... I'd have hated it. But I like my current coworkers.

This. One nice thing about working for an extremely small company is not having to deal with stupid stuff like HR, keeping track of vacation days, clocking in/out at certain hours, etc.
Let's go, Brandon!

So you're advocating upper management directly lead the plebes? Yeah screw that.

I'm too busy organizing feel-good virtual team events, with a heavy brow beating of DEI on the side, to meet my performance objectives and get my full bonus.

HR Rep: "My friend jenny said that tarynn in contracts like-likes that todd guy in purchasing, but she doesn't know if he likes her."
HR Manager: "They would look so cute together. We should have a mixer. That always worked in my sorority."
