Not exactly. But unintended consequences of government. The government used to set the price for each flight leg (and high of course, because, government). With all prices on the same leg being the same, airlines had to find other ways to attract more customer share (especially business). They did that by having executive upstairs lounges (on 747) and attractive stewardesses in skimpy outfits.

Once deregulation happened, flights got cheaper, seats got smaller, executive lounges were replaced by seating and hot stewardesses didn't lower prices; which became the main differentiator for many customer's decisions. Airlines still have perks to cater to the business traveler, but they're a shell of what they used to be.

Father time is undefeated. The stewardesses that were hot when I was a young man - 70's & 80"s - are still working today. They can't help aging.

Yeah, foreign airlines can still strictly enforce height and weight requirements, so they'll all be better.

All US airlines are unionized - ergo, old and fats

Generally, all the far east airlines do a great job - but then - well, Russia.

They were hot back in the day because flying was exciting. It was new, go to exotic places, and your customers were generally wealthy businessmen. Perfect for a young, single woman.

That's no longer the case so the positions are filled by other folks who don't mind being away from home for extended periods of time in search for some strange - old crusty divorcees or gays.

Meet the losers

My sister, who was 13 years older than me, became an Eastern Airlines Stewardess in 1967. I remember my Mom telling me they interviewed 100 women that day and only selected two...my sister being one of them.

Back then you could not be married, you had to be thin, you had to be pretty, you had to be young, and you had to display confidence and exuberance. In a nutshell, it was a much different world back then.

She got married in 1969 and had to quit Eastern. I don't recall her complaining...it just was the way it was. In retrospect, it was blatantly sexist.

Today, I don't care if my flight attendant is male/female, old/young, thin/fat, straight/gay, white/black/other....just be proficient at your job.
