I'd say it was Gatesville, TX.

I value any opinions.

I've heard that Arlen is supposed to be like Garland... But it's not. Wherever they're from, they sure do have a deep love for Tom Landry. I'd guess somewhere not in South Texas.

I used to have a deer lease just outside of Gatesville. Good ol' Mullin.

Its Garland. Notice how they go into Dallas for the big purchases.

The producer of the show is originally from Garland. Arlen is Garland without the G. Although it's unkown exactly where Arlen is, I think it's closer to Dallas..... The Hill's are Cowboy fans and Ranger fans and Tom Landry fans.... they've also referenced DFW Airport on more than one occasion........

They make too many quick trips accross the border to make "Arlen" anywhere near Dallas, although that is sort of what we are led to believe. Gatesville??????? The Hills and friends are far too sophisticated for Gatesville. I should know ...... one of our ranches is near there! Although they do play Belton (Tigers, not Armadillos) in football ....

I think the guy who created the show is Matt Judge? Can't remember name for sure. However, I thought he was originally from Austin. Beavis and Butthead was another one of his creations, and they were in Texas somewhere. Also, Office Space was his movie and it was set and filmed in Austin.
My guess is Central Texas somewhere, with Austin being a good guess.

Mike Judge once said he based Highland (where B&B lived) on Humble.

I'd like to know what McMaynerbury is based on, too.

Arlen is four hours from everywhere, but closest to Dallas. Hank took his mom and her friends to South Padre to visit a miniatures museum ... just happened to coincide with spring break. Took them four hours to get there. Peggy's taken middle school kids on field day trips to Mexico.

Please note that they made a day trip to Mexico when there was a shortage of Alamo Beer stateside.

I'm pretty sure Mike Judge is from the Dallas area, although he lives and works in Austin now. I'd be more inclined to say they live in the DFW area

I was just going to post that about the short trip to mexico, which got me to wondering, too, about where Arlen was located. I just have a hard time picturing Arlen as a south texas town. Maybe Midland???? I have never been to San Angelo so I don't know what that area is like.

My wife, who's from Rowlett/Garland would disagree. Ever notice that extremely huge "Megalo-Mart"? One of the only Wal-Mart "Hyper-Marts", an insanely huge test version, is in...you guessed it...Garland. Every time we watch the show, she's like "I know that place!!!" Pretty sure Judge went to Garland High (her highschool.)

McMaynerberry is so funny to me for some reason. Such a typical "rival" town. HA.

I friggin love that show.

IT is Garland. as far as the trips go, its a frickin cartoon. when they make episodes they don't sit back and try to think is this geographically reasonable ? its based on the town but thats it. there are no geographical considerations. "Arlan" might as well be in illinois or arizona. the only real geographical consideration is how the people act. but thats because thats how he remembers people from there.

I have friends from Garland who claim that King of the Hill's Arlen is based on Garland.

Also Office Space may have been filmed in Austin (I don't know for sure), but it was definitely based on Dallas. One sure tip-off is when Lawrence is griping about,
quote:
...getting up a 6AM to drag his butt over to Las Colinas

...where he was installing the drywall in the new McDonalds.

Who really cares? It isn't as fun as the what state the Simpsons live in, because the writers of the Simpsons make running jokes about it. King of the Hill doesn't do that.

there is a comment on the episode about wichita falls (cowboys training camp)where hank comments that it is a 6 hour drive. garland obviously isn't that far.

Bob- I knew the opening scenes were in Dallas, but I would have guessed they were filmed somewhere along 183...

I thought they said something on a recent show about being near Travis County. My vote goes out to somewhere near Austin.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118375/trivia

quote:
The show goes out of its way to avoid pinpointing the location of its fictional setting of Arlen. The name is reminiscent of two suburbs of Dallas-Fort Worth (Arlington and Garland). The plots of several episodes plus the landscape make it appear to be set in West-Central Texas (day trips to Mexico and Wichita Falls, for example). Other shows would make one think it was closer to Waco (playing Belton in football). More recently, Khan has been commuting daily to Houston, which would make it more likely Arlen is in East Texas. The county name of Heimlich isn't really similar to any of Texas's 254 real counties. The puzzle is almost as convoluted as the question of where "The Simpsons" Springfield is.

Since it's on the internet, it must be true.

It is nominally based on the real-life town of Garland, Texas, a suburb of Dallas where series creator Mike Judge lived for some time.

did you ever see the simpsons where homer goes off to work in the West Springfield oil fields... and they go look at the map of springfield and west springfield is an exact copy of all of west texas... that was funny.

From the same site:
quote:
In the episode, "Hank's Dirty Laundry", the Hill residence is shown as being located at 320 Rainey, Arlen, TX 78701. '78701' is really the default standard U.S. Postal Service zip code for Austin, Texas.

Yeah, the buildings and apartments in Office Space remind me of Las Colinas. Especially going North on MacArthur or O'Conner.
