What do you use? I've got a yard full of them and usually just mow over them. Thinking about cracking them if it isn't too much trouble.

This will give you enough adjustment/finesse to crack it just enough to get halves without destroying the pecan. Shell them by hand unless you want to open a shelling plant.

Variety matters a lot on how easy they are to shell. For instance, Cheyenne >>> Desirable (for shelling purposes).

When I was a kid, we had two very large pecan trees. The fun part was getting to climb up in the trees and shake all the branches, so those that hadn't drop would drop. The sucky parts were picking hundreds and hundreds of pecans off the ground and then shelling them once we got home.

We had two of the shellers like the one in your picture and they did make the job much easier.

The homemade butter pecan ice cream my mom would make with the pecans was delicious!!

Serious note. My grandfather always had one of these close.

We had one of these for a while. They were a bit noisy, and the rubber bands kept wearing out.

I think that, other than its terrible flavor and texture, having to spend afternoons shelling them is why I hate them so much.

I've always just put two in my hand and then squeeze them together. One of them will crack.

Let the squirrels have them for winter and purchase cracked ones from the Aggie whose parents sell and ship them annually on Classified forum..

This is the answer. Set it wide enough to put just enough pressure to crack the shell and preserve the nut.

Turning the nut between a quarter and a half and cracking till you get that 2nd lighter softer crack is the key.

I've busted a lot of nuts in my time and there's no better way to deliver a high quality payload this way.
